A hotel built by stacking structures shaped like tea chests has unexpectedly captured the attention of travelers. Located in downtown Chiayi“Taicheng Tea Appearance”is a warm addition to southern Taiwan’s hospitality scene. Instead of following the big-city route like Kaohsiung or Tainan, it centers on Alishan tea, quietly crafting a realm and spatial aesthetic around tea. “From a distance, the building resembles a gentleman from an old town, warmly welcoming guests from afar.” That’s how the hotel describes its own appearance.

Since the theme is “tea,” there are several classic tea-inspired highlights inside the guesthouse worth checking out. One is the traditional red-brick kiln tea-brewing area located in the rest zone to the right just before the main entrance, where herbal medicinal teas for soaking in guest room baths are prepared. Another is the wall of dark-hued aged tea urns in the lobby — traditional tea canisters and utensils are meticulously curated, and their display showcases an artistic blend of retro and modern aesthetics. Then there’s the bath tea served in rooms — a rare sight in Taiwan — made by brewing tea on-site, giving off a subtle and unique fragrance. Lastly, the irregular, tea-chest-stacked exterior shape also brings an element of playful charm.

“Taicheng Tea Appearance” doesn’t go for loud, eye-catching cultural creativity but instead wins with a sense of urban tranquility. It stands out as a refreshing piece within Taiwan’s cultural creative accommodation scene. Calling it a “piece” means its refined artistic sensibility is something to look forward to. To be specific, Tea Appearance plays with an elegant vibe that stems from minimalism — simply put, it provides essential services but enhances standard amenities with impressive touches.

For a soak, tea is added to the bath; for tea tasting, carefully packaged leaves sourced from Alishan are offered; for brushing teeth and washing up, the supplies are presented as unique, artistic designs. Tea Appearance keeps it simple — it adds a little something to everything, and when all those small details come together, they leave a lasting impression on guests.

Operated under “Chengyi Cultural Travel,” the room names at Taicheng Tea Appearance follow the concept of traditional solar terms, drawing inspiration from the 24 solar terms and blending them into the tea-themed lodging space. There are rooms such as the Guyu Standard Double Room, Bailu Executive Double Room, Xiazhi Standard Quadruple Room, Xiaoxue Executive Quadruple Room, and Suiji Ji Exclusive Suite. Alongside standard Western-style rooms, there are also Japanese-style hybrid rooms with tatami mats. Chengyi Cultural Travel’s public relations representative Molly says the hotel is suitable for a wide range of guests.

Aside from its creative style, the rooftop pool is a major draw for locals in Chiayi. The infinity pool offers sweeping views of the cityscape, with night traffic flowing beneath, complemented by lighting and music, giving Chiayi’s urban nightscape a distinctive glow.
