Taichung strolling dessert: Ryukawa-ya, the ice cream pineapple bun bakery

My friend Mika asked me to accompany her to this place called “Ryukawa-ya,” but actually, Ryukawa-ya was already on my personal must-visit list!

The most eye-catching items are their pineapple buns with ice cream and the super cute painted wall, which have become super popular Instagram photo spots…

Ryukawa-ya is located in a lane on Zili Street in West District. The most adorable part is this painted wall, which is why it became a super trendy IG photo spot in Taichung shortly after opening…

All the products at Ryukawa-ya use French Lescure AOP premium fermented butter, which is 100% natural butter. Compared to other types of butter, the cost is much higher…

These days, not many places are willing to use such environmentally friendly and natural butter, as it’s genuinely not cheap!

The most eye-catching has to be this ice cream pineapple bun on the wall, right?!

Later, we learned from the shop staff that Ryukawa-ya was originally just a simple bakery, and the ice cream pineapple bun was an accidental creation—but it unexpectedly became very popular…

They say young people these days love taking photos for social media, and anything with a fun angle can go viral…

There are five ice cream flavors to choose from, all using Tip-Top brand ice cream from New Zealand, the country’s top-selling brand…

The owner happened to be making bread when we visited, so we secretly snapped a few shots—the dough balls looked so plump and white, absolutely mouthwatering…

When we arrived, the pineapple buns had just come out of the oven!

I really love the smell of freshly baked bread—it’s so comforting. People who love bread can’t be bad, right!? (← Where did that adjective come from!? XD)

The bread at Ryukawa-ya is all fermented using Japanese Hoshino natural yeast starter. While we usually see more sweet croissants, you can also try salted croissants here at Ryukawa-ya!

They have a nice chewy texture, and the sweetness becomes more pronounced the more you chew.

The ratio of the pineapple crust to the dough is 1:1, and they even use Anchor New Zealand butter, which has an enchantingly rich aroma…

The crispness of the crust is truly impressive, while the inside is soft and fluffy—just eating it on its own is already excellent…

Meat floss bun – This is probably a nostalgic treat from everyone’s childhood, right? You can still find it at many traditional bakeries today!

However, most meat floss buns usually use mayonnaise as the filling, but Ryukawa-ya uses Hokkaido condensed milk filling—now that’s going all out…

I think it’s really delicious, savory and fragrant. After eating one, it’s hard to stop!

Ice cream croissant – We chose boysenberry and matcha flavors, paired with a macaron. It’s colorful and looks so tasty…

The croissant is warm, the ice cream is cold—this combo gives off a hot-and-cold, multi-layered sensation with a rich variety of textures…

We pretentiously posed in front of some green leaves just for the ‘gram, haha, XD!

Ice cream pineapple bun – In comparison, the texture of the pineapple bun is softer and more tender than the croissant, and I personally prefer this kind of texture…

But because it’s a pineapple bun, the portion is bigger, so one is pretty filling…

It comes with boysenberry and chocolate-flavored ice cream. The taste is rich but not overly sweet—tangy with sweetness, sweet with a hint of tartness…

Many people, just like us, go home with a bag of bread—the transparent bags are so adorable and make the bread feel even more premium...

This article wasn’t originally planned, but recently many in the community recommended this place, “Yanagawa-ya.” I obediently dug up some photos and wrote what I think is a touching and well-written piece... XD
