Step into the "Hometown of Skywalks" – 6 Must-Visit Skywalks in Nantou

Taiwan is home to countless skywalks, but Nantou County boasts the highest concentration, earning it the nickname "Hometown of Skywalks." Below is a list of six must-visit skywalks in Nantou, each with its own unique features and breathtaking views. With their transparent decks, visitors can look down at the lush mountains and steep cliffs beneath their feet, offering an adrenaline-pumping experience that will challenge even the bravest hearts.

1. Xinyi Township – Pinglai Glass Light Bridge
Located in the Pinglai Creek Valley of Xinyi Township, the "Glass Light Bridge" stretches 88 meters in total, featuring a pioneering 54-meter-long fully transparent deck made of reinforced glass. The thrill level is off the charts, allowing visitors to gaze down at the 60-meter-deep Pinglai Creek Valley scenery right beneath their feet. However, for safety and bridge maintenance reasons, no more than 15 people are allowed on the bridge at the same time. It’s best to wear cloth shoes when visiting; if you have shoes that may wear down the bridge surface, the park will provide shoe covers free of charge.

2. Zhushan Town – Taiji Gorge Sky Ladder
The "Zhushan Sky Ladder," located on Dashan Mountain in Zhushan, is Taiwan’s first step-style cable suspension bridge. Stretching 136 meters with 208 steps and featuring a height difference of 20 meters between its two ends, the bridge allows visitors to cross the 100-meter-deep Taiji Creek Valley. Standing on the ladder, you can take in the panoramic views of rugged cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

The Nantou County Government also reminds visitors that temperatures in the mountainous area around the Zhushan Sky Ladder vary greatly between day and night. The entire round-trip route spans 4 kilometers along rugged mountain paths, so it’s important to assess your physical condition and bring appropriate warm clothing.

3. Nantou City – Hou Shenjing Sky Bridge
Known as the longest sky bridge in Taiwan, the "Hou Shenjing Sky Bridge" is located within the Hou Shenjing Scenic Area. Spanning 204 meters with 265 steps and a height difference of 5.65 meters between its ends, the bridge resembles a gentle smile hanging in the valley, earning it the nickname "Smiling Sky Ladder."

During the day, walkers can enjoy sweeping views of the verdant valley or peer down into the roughly 70-meter-deep gorge below. At night, newly installed butterfly-shaped light art decorates the surroundings of the bridge, casting vibrant colors that create a romantic ambiance, making it a favorite spot for couples.

4. Ren’ai Township – Aoyuan Suspension Bridge
Within the beautiful Aoyuan Grand Canyon Scenic Area, which has scenic charm year-round, the 180-meter-long "Aoyuan Suspension Bridge" spans across the mountains and is the best vantage point to admire the geological wonders of Aoyuan. From afar, you can view the forest park and pine forest areas, while up close, you can peer down at the 90-meter-deep valley beneath your feet. When visiting Aoyuan for cherry blossoms or maple leaves, don’t miss this spot, where you can also enjoy waterfall views.

5. Zhongliao Township – Longfeng Waterfall Aerial Walkway
The Longfeng Waterfall Aerial Walkway is not yet officially open to the public but is expected to begin trial operations in July.

Located 5 meters above the source of Longfeng Waterfall, the walkway is designed in the style of the Grand Canyon Skywalk in the United States. Stretching 30 meters in length and extending approximately 13 meters over the waterfall, the entire structure features a transparent, non-suspended U-shaped walkway. Standing at the outermost edge of the walkway allows you to peer down into the 50-meter-deep valley. The combination of height and transparency provides a thrilling test of courage for visitors.

VI. Shuili Township – Shuili Magpie Bridge
The "Shuili Magpie Bridge" is located in Shang’an Village, Shuili Township. This suspension bridge spans a total of 25 meters across a river, and is a well-known attraction in the village. In addition, the white plum blossom scenery in Shang’an Village rivals that of Fengdougui in Xinyi Township. The expansive 40-hectare plum orchard turns white as snow when the blossoms are in full bloom, resembling a snowy landscape. Scenic plum blossom spots can also be found on both sides of the Magpie Bridge. If you want to enjoy plum blossoms without the crowds in Xinyi Township, this is another great destination.
