Seven killed and 19 injured in rockfall at Diecai Mountain in Guilin, Guangxi; 8 Taiwanese tourists hurt but in stable condition

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that a rockfall incident occurred at Diecai Mountain in Guilin on the morning of the 19th, resulting in seven deaths and 19 injuries. The injured are being treated at Guilin People's Hospital and Guilin No. 2 People's Hospital. According to the notification from the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation, eight of the injured are Taiwanese tourists, but their injuries are not serious and they have rejoined the group after receiving medical treatment.

The Tourism Bureau’s notification stated that regarding the Guilin rockfall incident, verification returned at 14:30 on the 19th by the Kaohsiung Travel Agents Association confirmed that among the 36-person mainland Guangxi tour group organized by Jingcheng Travel Agency from March 17 to March 23, the group leader reported that eight people suffered bruises and abrasions from being pushed and falling during the incident. Among them, Huang X Ya and Huang X Ru had bone fractures in their hands, but all have rejoined the group after receiving medical treatment.

The Tourism Bureau stated that the accompanying tour leader, Huang Jianyi, is a certified tour guide, and the group has legally purchased travel agency liability insurance, which includes accident injury medical coverage of NT$100,000.

Xinhua News Agency reported that staff said that around 9 a.m. on the 19th, a rockfall incident occurred at the boat dock near Mulong Cave in the Diecai Mountain scenic area in Guilin. A large rock suddenly rolled down and hit several tourists who were disembarking from a boat onto the dock, resulting in four people being killed on the spot, while three others with critical injuries died en route to the hospital. There were “Caution: Falling Rocks” warning signs near the incident site. According to nearby residents, rockfalls are prone to occur in the Diecai Mountain scenic area.
