The nights in Kyoto’s Pontocho are bustling with life, the traditional alleyways filled with lively chatter. The warm glow from the shops attracts hungry visitors. Last time I had gyūtan nabe at Toriya, this time I’m trying the highly-rated dan dan noodles at Rokudenya, which has great online reviews.

I really enjoy walking around Pontocho at night.

Today’s destination is Rokudenya—business is pretty good, and you might have to wait if you come later.

Luckily, I arrived early and there was still a seat on the second floor.

Their dan dan hot pot looks amazing, but it’s more suitable for groups. For example, a single portion costs 1,280 yen, and you need to order at least two servings.

There seem to be quite a few Taiwanese and Chinese customers here—they have a Chinese menu, and you can ask the staff for it.

If you don’t want a hot pot, you can also order dan dan noodles. The soup base is probably the same as the hot pot, it’s not expensive and lets you try the flavor.

Kakuni (braised pork), 250 yen—I thought the sauce tasted pretty good.

Pan-fried dumplings, 400 yen.

Medium-sized.

Crispy thin skin, generous filling, and quite delicious.

Japan’s No. 1 Spiciest Dan Dan Noodles: 850 yen Black Sesame Dan Dan Noodles: 850 yen
Another one I remember isSalt-flavored Pork Fried Noodles, probably 950 yen.

This was what my friend ordered—I personally don’t really like salty flavors.

These are the Black Sesame Dan Dan Noodles I ordered. This dish is actually what put this place on my must-try list.

Look at this bottomless-looking soup—the miso broth is rich with sesame flavor. Despite being so intense, it’s incredibly drinkable, sip after sip. The noodles are very chewy and delicious, with just the right thickness and width. The slightly curved shape helps them absorb the broth while still being easy to pick up.

This one just looks intense from the color—it’s Japan’s No. 1 Spiciest Dan Dan Noodles.

Do they really need to put so much chili in to scare people off???

Spicy food lovers should definitely give this a try—it’s guaranteed to make your stomach burn (hahaha). Also, don’t take too long taking photos. The noodles served at the same time will start to get soft if you wait too long, so the trick is to enjoy them as soon as they arrive!
