Formosan lilies at Aowanda are growing wildly — can they surpass last year’s record of 3.5 meters?

In early March, we finally welcomed this year’s first spring rain. The plants in Aowanda Forest Recreation Area, which had suffered from drought, are now brimming with the vitality of spring thanks to the nourishing rainfall. The Formosan lilies that grew as tall as 3.5 meters last summer have sprouted new shoots this year, and have already reached a height of 1.2 meters. They are expected to reach new heights this year.

Typically, Taiwan lilies bloom when their stems reach around 1 meter in height.The main flowering season at Aowanda is from mid-June to mid-July. Lilies in the Aowanda area often grow up to 2 meters tall, which is believed to be related to the fertility of the soil and the abundant sunlight. Last year, one lily growing on a flower stand at the park office entrance even reached an impressive 3.5 meters.This year, that same plant has sprouted anew, and its height has already exceeded 1 meter. Most remarkably, two shoots have emerged this year. Whether they will both grow as tall as 3.5 meters or even higher, as last year’s did, remains to be seen.
