The first 2015 "blue tears" phenomenon spotted in Nangan on April 1st — a magical sight along the Matsu coastline

Following recent photos of "blue tears" taken in Dongyin, accommodation operators in Nangan, Matsu, also captured the first photo of the 2015 blue tears in the early hours of April 1st, just after the moon had set (between 4:30–5:15 am) and before the blue light of the sun appeared. Tourism operators in Nangan noted that once the blue tears appear, they can be seen across all four townships and five islands of Matsu, not limited to any single island. It is advised to go with local homestay hosts or guides for safety.

Every year during the transition from spring to summer, the waters around Matsu display the blue tears phenomenon, where faint blue lights twinkle on the sea surface, glowing with a soft blue fluorescence. Starting in April, this spectacle attracts travelers from across the country to Matsu to witness the “blue tears.”

Visitors hoping to see the blue tears in person can head to coastal areas such as Fu Zheng Beach and Meng’ao Harbor in Dongju, Qiaozi and Qinbi Beach or Tanghoudao Beach in Beigan, and Jinsha Beach and Ren’ai Iron Fort in Nangan.

The blue tears usually appear between April and August each year, peaking in April and May, and lasting until July. However, as this is a natural biological phenomenon, its duration varies. The chances of seeing the blue tears are higher during the moon’s waning phase. Travelers planning to visit Matsu to see the blue tears might consider scheduling a trip during the Lunar New Year holiday to experience this magical sight.
