Nowadays, breakfast shops are embracing a retro trend, and grilled toast is all the rage. What if you’re craving it but can’t get out of bed? No worries — there’s a new hybrid eatery called “Fries” opening soon on Yanji Street in Taipei. It specializes in freshly blended fruit juices and grilled toast, and the best part is it operates 24 hours a day. So for those who can’t enjoy grilled toast for breakfast, how about having it as a late-night snack? Fries is set to open on April 18.

Shen Lüyang, one of the partners at the hybrid eatery “Fries” located on Yanji Street in Taipei, said that since most people these days rely on takeout food — which tends to be high in oil, salt, and sugar — it’s actually not very healthy. The goal was to provide healthier food options. They initially focused on freshly blended juices, and later expanded the menu to include grilled toast and ice cream. Shen explained that their grilled toast also follows a healthy approach: the bread used is milk toast, the same type exclusively supplied to five-star hotels, while the pork chops are made from whole loin cuts that are marinated and seasoned in-house.

In addition to traditional meat patty and egg combinations, they’ve also incorporated fruits into the offerings, such as strawberry peanut flavor, kiwi peanut flavor, and apple flavor. The apple flavor doesn’t simply involve slicing apples — sugar is sprinkled on top and caramelized with a flame, resulting in a crispy, sweet-and-sour texture. Shen Lüyang said this creative idea was inspired by candied hawthorn skewers.

Another flagship item at Fries — freshly blended juices. Shen Lüyang mentioned that all the fruits used are ordered directly from production and sales groups in Pingtung. Besides ensuring freshness, this approach also supports local farmers and helps reduce costs. Additionally, to enhance taste and maintain hygiene, they specifically purchased an ice-making machine.

▲ Freshly blended papaya milk.

Even though it’s located in a prime spot, Shen Lüyang doesn’t want to set prices too high: papaya milk is 60 NT dollars, watermelon juice is 45 NT dollars, and the plain cheese pork chop grilled toast is less than 100 NT dollars (80 NT dollars), with the lowest-priced option being just 35 NT dollars (condensed milk toast). Orders over 300 NT dollars qualify for delivery.
