I absolutely love Tainan’s street food—the unique sweet-and-salty flavors are right up my alley. Especially the super-dense West Central District, which I frequent all the time. After visiting Tainan so many times and exploring both famous and hidden culinary gems, there are always a few that I secretly adore—must-eats every time I come, even ones I suddenly crave at midnight. So I’ve compiled my favorite 12 “wicked” late-night eats in the West Central District to help you find delicious snacks when hunger strikes in the wee hours. This list of guilty pleasures includes: Shixiangke Chicken Stop, Yucheng Fruit Shop, Ajiang Fried Eel, Shanghao Roast Delicacies, Hudu Rice Cake, Mom Li’s Ethnic Stir-Fried Noodles, Shuixian Temple Rice Cake, Doujiang Zong, Qiushou Charcoal Grill, Xiaohaozhou Satay Grill, Liu Family’s Zongzi (Chicken & Pork), and Ah Ming’s Pig Heart Glass Noodles. These are my top wicked eats in West Central—of course, taste is subjective, so consider them just recommendations. Now let’s dive into these 12 amazing spots!
1. Yucheng Fruit Shop
Yucheng Fruit Shop
Address: No. 122, Section 1, Minsheng Road, Tainan City (at the intersection with Yongfu Road)
Phone: 06-2296196
Business Hours: 12:00 PM – 5:00 AM
Must-Try: Fresh Fruit Ice
Note: If you suddenly crave shaved ice at midnight, this is THE place to go!
%Jibazha3shang??juan is almost one of the must-visits every time I go to Tainan. Especially the towering fresh fruit ice—it feels like you haven’t really been to Tainan if you don’t try it!

%Jibazha3shang??juan The shop’s signature is its refreshing and flavorful treat. The mildly sweet syrup seeps into the ice after grilling, and the aroma alone is mouthwatering. Topped with a generous helping of sesame, it’s bursting with fragrance!

%The fresh fruit ice here lets you enjoy a variety of seasonal fruits, each incredibly sweet. Paired with soft and chewy shaved ice, mango juice, and sugar syrup, it’s simply divine. Whenever I’m full but want some fruit for dessert, I head straight here. There are also plenty of fresh fruits on display, all looking top-quality—which explains how delicious they taste. Strawberry lovers shouldn’t miss the fresh strawberry milk ice: two layers of fresh strawberries are arranged on the shaved ice, drizzled with strawberry sauce and condensed milk, topped with a scoop of strawberry ice cream. It’s slightly tangy and sweet, with an intense strawberry aroma. Best of all, the strawberries are super sweet—my strawberry-obsessed friend even eats this when they have a cold. For those who love traditional flavors, try the red bean pudding milk ice: a thick layer of simmered red beans on the shaved ice, topped with condensed milk and syrup, then a classic-style pudding. The beans are perfectly cooked—soft yet firm, not too mushy or hard—and pair wonderfully with the slightly caramelized, soft-textured old-school pudding. One bite is pure joy. If you can’t have ice, there’s also a mixed fruit platter, with portion sizes available based on group size. Just let the staff know if you’re allergic to any fruit—they’ll substitute it. Sweet, juicy fruit paired with the provided plum powder makes for an incredibly tasty treat!

2. Shixiangke Chicken Stop
Shixiangke Chicken Stop – Chicken Cutlet & Beverage Specialty
Address: No. 81, Section 1, Beimen Road, Tainan’s West Central District (diagonally opposite Nan Yi Bookstore, with parking spaces along the road)
Phone: 0982-624497
Business Hours: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Must-Try: Grilled Chicken Cutlet, Lava Sweet Bun
Note: The ultimate guilty pleasure for late-night snacking—if you can’t wait, go ahead and grab one as early as 3 or 4 PM!
%Jici chuan ke ji zhan de jichi paigu zenme neng buyong la? The lightly sweet glaze infuses the chicken after grilling, making it irresistible just from the aroma. Topped with a generous sprinkle of sesame, it’s bursting with flavor!

%Ji zai Tainan xianchang de shaoji paigu zhong, zhe jia "Shixiangke Chicken Stop" de jichi paigu, yinwei niurou fengwei he xiangla de pei liao, rang ren tebie xiang chi. The chicken here stands out among Tainan’s grilled offerings—its savory taste and spicy seasonings make it especially crave-worthy.

%The sweet buns here are super fluffy. Though they look a bit heavy, they’re surprisingly not greasy at all. Paired with the chicken cutlet, they’re the perfect combo for a late-night or afternoon snack. Don’t forget to try their freshly brewed tea—the perfect pairing. Want to feel a little less guilty? Go for the unsweetened brown rice green tea like I do—it’s light and refreshing, complementing the chicken perfectly. Or go bold with the Golden Lion Royal Milk Tea—rich tea aroma and creamy milk flavor, the ideal match for your chicken!

%Additionally, the squid here is thicker than our fingers—more than double the usual size. It’s soft and chewy, bringing out the sweet umami of the squid even more. Topped with scallions, garlic, and pepper, it’s bursting with flavor and gets devoured in seconds. Another jaw-dropping delight is the crispy chicken cutlet. In addition to the grilled version, the crispy one also wowed me. But don’t forget to pair your meal with their freshly brewed teas. If you want to cut back on calories, try the unsweetened brown rice green tea like I do—it’s light and pairs well. Prefer something richer? Go for the Golden Lion Royal Milk Tea—bold tea and creamy milk, guaranteed to be your chicken’s best buddy!

%Ji pai wai pi cuicui, yikou ya kai, houshi de jirou feichang ruan nennong zhi, pei he huajiao xiangwei geng wei mimiren, mei xiangdao ji ben ban de jipai ye neng ruci meiwei a (manzu zhuang)! The chicken cutlet has a super crispy crust—bite in, and the thick, juicy meat inside is incredibly tender and flavorful, enhanced by the aroma of pepper. Who knew even the basic chicken cutlet could be this delicious (satisfied sigh)! And then there’s my favorite, the Lava Sweet Bun—deep-fried silver thread rolls drenched in condensed milk and chocolate sauce. It’s crispy outside, soft inside, and the moment you bite in, the sweet chocolate and condensed milk burst out. It’s seriously indulgent—but I love it to bits!

3. Ajiang Fried Eel
Ajiang Fried Eel
Address: No. 89, Section 3, Minzu Road, Tainan’s West Central District (with parking spaces along the road)
Business hours: 5:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Phone: 0937-671052
Highly recommended: Eel pasta (wet version)
Note: If you don’t like sweet flavors, try the dry stir-fried eel pasta—it’s not on the menu but they can make it for you.
%On the wall were simply listed two dishes: eel pasta and eel rice noodles. The owner would ask if you want it dry or wet. The dry version is saltier in flavor. Because I’m a big fan of Tainan’s sweet tastes, I ordered the wet eel pasta.

%It’s located in an alley where the building shows years of history. You enter through a small corridor, then see a menu posted inside with Chinese medicine ingredients, and some uniquely spicy options. The wet eel pasta here is really well made—it’s a family-run spot that’s been around for over 30 years.

%The owner chatted with us happily and even explained the medicinal ingredients on the wall. The ingredients aren’t ordinary—they’re special selections. The wet eel pasta is quite flavorful. We also had rice wine (not for those under 18), which went surprisingly well with the food.

4【Premium Grilled Braised Delicacies】
Premium Grilled Braised Delicacies
Address: No. 254, Kangle St., West Central District, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2293407
Business hours: 4:30 PM – 11:00 PM (or until sold out, Monday–Saturday, closed on Sunday)
Highly recommended: Chicken wings, dried tofu, bean curd sheets, pig’s blood cake
Note: They usually sell out by 8 or 9 PM on holidays, so go early for more choices. You can ask the owner to add a bit of spice or to pack the sauce separately after slicing—the flavor gets even better.
%We arrived pretty late at night, and most popular snacks were already sold out. The remaining items were mostly deep-fried. But the snacks here are known for being marinated first and then grilled, so prep time is long and they only prepare limited amounts each day—once it’s gone, they close. Prices are either based on market rates or adjusted according to cost—you can always ask the staff, who are quite friendly.
%The chicken wings are tender and juicy, with a mild sweet-salty taste that many love.

%The grilled tofu also has no strong smells, but the texture is great, and the flavor is rich. There's a subtle braised aroma inside, a hint of charred fragrance from the grill, and a mildly sweet-salty taste with a honey-glaze feel that really whets the appetite.

5【HuDou Rice Cake】

HuDou Rice Cake

Address: No. 98, Section 4, Jinhua Rd., West Central District, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2200556
Business hours: 5:30 PM – 12:30 AM
Highly recommended: Rice cake, pot-fired pasta
Note: First-timers can try the rice cake, oyster omelet, and pot-fired pasta. The dumplings are small but quite popular too.
%This place is a hidden gem recommended by locals. It may look simple at first glance, but the ordering process is well organized. You pay at the counter first, then the staff will call out your order to the kitchen using a speaker. The service is fast and quite an interesting sight in the world of street food.
%The rice cake here is topped with braised sauce, pork lard, fish floss, and cucumber for balance. The taste is refreshing, mildly sweet-salty, and not greasy at all. The oyster omelet is quite generous in portion—you can taste the egg and fresh oysters, with plenty of oysters inside. The sweet-salty sauce adds a nice kick. The pot-fired pasta is super generous, packed with seafood, hotpot ingredients, eggs, and more. The broth is made with flounder fish and seasoned with satay powder—it’s sweet, aromatic, and delicious. First-timers can try all three like I did—you might just find your new favorite late-night snack.
6【Auntie Li’s Ethnic Pot-Fired Pasta】

Auntie Li’s Ethnic Pot-Fired Legacy Shop

6【Mama Li’s Ethnic Stir-Fried Pasta】
Mama Li’s Ethnic Stir-Fried Pasta Old Shop
Address: No. 2, Dongjie, Chihai, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2227654
Business Hours: 11:00–23:00 (Closed on Mondays)
Recommended Dishes: Clay Pot Pasta, Live Squid
Note: It’s less crowded if you visit outside peak dining hours.
%This "Grandma Lee's Ethnic Clay Pot Pasta," established in 1957, has been around for over sixty years. Originally, Ms. Li Zhuangfengzhi sold fried oyster fritters and salted rice dumplings by the sea. Later, due to restrictions, she developed the "clay pot pasta." This simple yet delicious dish has continued to this day, now offering many more varieties of meals. In addition to the signature clay pot pasta, the live squid is a must-order popular dish at every table. The thicker Argentine squid is paired with a unique Hai Shan sauce, resulting in a soft, chewy texture that gets better with every bite.

%The dish is generously topped with various ingredients such as tempura shrimp, tempura fish, fish cake, bok choy, eggs, and more—it looks hearty and substantial. The tempura, soaked in the soup, has a soft outer layer that absorbs the rich bonito broth, making it wonderfully sweet. The pasta doesn’t become overly mushy but instead has a soft, chewy texture that gets more addictive the more you eat. Though the portion isn’t large, the flavor and broth make it a favorite for a big eater like me.

7【Water Immortal Temple Rice Cake】
Water Immortal Temple Rice Cake
Address: No. 44, Section 3, Minquan Road, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2202407
Business Hours: 16:00–1:00 AM
Recommended Dishes: Rice Cake, Four-Gods Soup
Note: It’s less crowded around 8 or 9 PM. Find a seat first before ordering.
%This rice cake shop started as a street cart and has now grown into a storefront, passed down through two generations with a history of half a century.

%The rice cakes here are generously filled. The savory filling is paired with slow-cooked pork lard, braised sauce, fish floss, and cucumber, offering a mild sweet-salty taste that lingers on the palate. Paired with fish floss and pork lard, it’s quite appetizing. The intestines in the Four-Gods Soup are cleaned very well, with a slight soft chewiness, and the soup is light and sweet. The best part is both dishes are only 25 NTD each and very filling. You can also order eel pasta from the stall next door—this time I tried the dry version, which has a distinctly different sweetness compared to Ah Jiang’s dry eel pasta. I still prefer Ah Jiang’s, but those who like sweet dry pasta should give it a try.

8【Soy Milk Clan】
Soy Milk Clan
Address: No. 175, Section 2, Fufront Road, West Central District, Tainan City (street parking available)
Phone: 06-2288257
Business Hours: 22:00–12:00 (next day noon)
Closed: 2nd and 16th days of the lunar month
Recommended Dishes: Sate Egg Pancake, Soy Milk, Fresh Milk Tea
Note: Since there aren’t many seats, it’s more efficient if one person orders while another finds a table.
%This place was established in 1977 and was originally located at the intersection of Zhongzheng Road and Haian Road. Due to road widening, it moved to the intersection of Fufront Road and Jinhua Road—and has stayed there for 20 years.

%This is a classic spot locals love. We enjoy their egg pancakes, which are soft and fluffy, served with a choice of fillings like ham, sate, pickled radish, thousand-year egg, and soybean paste. The pancakes are made fresh and have an elastic texture. They’re delicious just with eggs and sate. The fresh milk tea tastes like the sweet milk we drank as kids, with a strong nostalgic vibe. Their homemade soy milk is a must—rich, thick, and full of bean flavor. The toast with egg is made by spreading margarine on the bread and topping it with a fried egg—sweet, milky, and eggy, simple yet delicious. The most unique thing here is that the owner uses only a cleaver throughout the whole process, whether frying eggs or chopping, which is really fun to watch.

9【Autumn Harvest BBQ】
Autumn Harvest BBQ
Location: Lane 61, Section 1, Fufront Road, West Central District, Tainan City (look for the lantern at the entrance; it’s across from Jin Fu Fried Eel)
Phone: 06-2144150
Business Hours: 18:00 – 3:00 AM
Must-try items: scallops, beef short ribs, chicken thigh cutlets, meat skewers, tofu skin
Note: Please get a number from the staff first upon arrival, then wait for your number to be called before being seated and ordering food.
Here is a cozy little spot where you can eat heartily and drink to your heart’s content — truly an enjoyable experience (but those under 18, please no drinking)! One of the must-order dishes here is the scallops — they’re Q-textured, sweet, and flavorful, and just three scallops cost only 25 NT$, offering great value for money!

Even if you’re not much of a hot pot person, you might still enjoy the oden here because there’s no spicy oil, so it’s easy on the palate. However, the pricing is quite reasonable, and aside from some of the meats, the other items are fairly affordable. The broth for the oden is made purely from simmering radishes and other vegetables — no MSG or seasonings added — so you can adjust the flavor with dipping sauces to your liking. It has a mild sweetness and the prices are not steep either.

There’s a wide variety of ingredients available here — pork slices, squid, intestines, duck blood cake, and all sorts of things you could possibly think of (and some you wouldn’t!) — creating a surprisingly nostalgic vibe. Our food arrived not long after ordering. The tofu skin was grilled until crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, brushed with a savory-sweet sauce that was really appetizing and delicious.

The offal also had a uniquely rich flavor — chewy and full of umami, making it feel like you were eating grilled intestines. The texture when hot was wonderfully tender. The grilled wheat rolls, eaten on their own, have a toast-like crispiness that’s satisfying, but dipped in mayonnaise, they take on a whole new dimension of taste. Other items like rice blood cake, shrimp, king oyster mushrooms, and clams are best enjoyed while hot. But overall, I’d recommend going for the meat skewers here.

10 【Xiao Hao Zhou Satay Hot Pot】
Xiao Hao Zhou Satay Hot Pot
Address: No. 111, Zhongshan Road, West Central District, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2205777
Business Hours: 10:00 – 12:00 AM (midnight)
Recommended Must-Try: flatfish, squid paste, mushroom paste, cabbage, pork slices, mushrooms
Note: First-timers can try the set meal — good value and lets you sample a variety of delicious dishes.
This old spot has been around since 1961, a local Tainan institution for over 50 years. They serve Guangdong-Shantou style satay hot pot, with both à la carte and set options at very reasonable prices.

What makes this place special are the broth, dipping sauces, and ingredients. The soup base is made from pork bone stock, enhanced with deep-fried flatfish and dried shrimp — the longer it simmers, the more aromatic it becomes. The dipping sauce is a specially made satay sauce, primarily made with peanut powder and garlic, blended with over 30 types of Chinese herbs. It’s delicious whether used as a dip or mixed with rice. Most of the ingredients are homemade — including fish ball, fish dumplings, and fish rolls — making it both safe and tasty to eat.

When we first tried it, we added a bit of the satay directly into the pot to infuse the flavors. As expected, every ingredient absorbed the sweet, savory taste of the satay. It’s delicious on its own, and when dipped, it offers a subtle peanut and garlic aroma — incredibly fragrant. Cooking it with vegetables brings out a wonderfully sweet and tasty flavor in every bite!

11 【Liu Family Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings) Shop】
Liu Family Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings) Shop (West Gate Branch)
Address: No. 439, Section 2, Ximen Road, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2251514
Business Hours: 24 hours
Recommended Must-Try: vegetable zongzi, pork zongzi, shark fin soup
Note: Perfect for a late-night or anytime hunger strikes — grab a zongzi anytime, 24/7.
I remember many years ago when a friend brought me here for the first time — what left the deepest impression was the “zongzi aroma.” The unique chewiness and sticky yet soft texture of the rice is what made me fall in love with this traditional southern-style zongzi at first bite.

Nowadays, there are still a few shops around that make them this way. The one we visited is located in a quiet alley. What stood out the most was how the rice was cooked — soft and sticky, with lean and fatty pork that’s been marinated and braised until tender and flavorful. Though it doesn’t look particularly fancy, the ingredients are solid and the taste is wonderful, which is exactly why I love it.

Every time I come here, I can’t help but finish the whole thing even though it’s quite filling. But I just can’t resist the deliciousness. Before serving, the pork zongzi is brushed with a sweet soy sauce glaze that glistens — absolutely irresistible.

The sticky rice inside is very moist, with that classic sticky texture. The filling of lean and fatty pork is marinated and braised until fragrant and tender. It may not look extravagant, but the ingredients are genuine and the taste is excellent — it’s a big favorite of mine.

You’ll also find that the portion size here is quite generous compared to other places. Whether it’s the vegetable zongzi or the pork zongzi, both contain peanuts that add extra fragrance. Paired with a bowl of shark fin soup, it makes for a perfect late-night snack.

12 【Ah Ming’s Pig Heart Glass Noodles】
Ah Ming’s Pig Heart Glass Noodles
Address: No. 72, Bao’an Road, West Central District, Tainan City
Phone: 06-2233741
Business Hours: 18:00 – 2:00 AM
Recommended Dishes: Garlic Pork Trotter Salad, Pig Heart Glass Noodles
Note: Find a seat first, then order from the owner.
% and the place is often packed during peak hours, so if you don’t grab a table early, you might have to wait in line. The environment is casual and bustling, and the prices are very affordable. The service is quick, and the food comes out fast. Even though the seating area is small, it doesn’t affect the overall dining experience. The location is also very central, and you won’t get lost finding it.

% I’ve been here many times, and each visit leaves me more impressed. The place isn’t very big, and the menu isn’t extensive, but what they do, they do exceptionally well. The garlic pork trotter salad is a must-order here, even more impressive than the pig heart glass noodles. The pork trotter is blanched and then tossed with minced garlic and soy sauce. It’s incredibly fragrant and delicious. The meat is boneless, eliminating the greasy feel often associated with pork trotters and avoiding any off-putting smell. When you bite into it, it’s tender yet slightly chewy—not mushy at all—and bursting with flavor. One piece after another, it’s addictive, and I still can’t forget how good it tastes.

Having visited Tainan so many times and tried over a hundred different foods, I can only say that the people of Tainan are truly blessed (I’m already envious!). From the wildly creative spicy grilled chicken cutlet to eel pasta, fresh fruit ice, rice cake, grilled Lu-style snacks, charcoal-grilled dishes, and pig heart glass noodles—every single one has captured my taste buds. A few of these spots are places I almost always visit every time I come to Tainan. They’re the kind of flavors that leave you longing even before you step out of the store. Of course, Tainan has countless other street foods waiting for me to explore. This list is just a personal selection of my favorite late-night eats in the West Central District, which I’d like to share with everyone. I hope you’ll enjoy them too.
