Moved by the devastation caused by the Nepal earthquake, he is donating what he calls the “last look” at Nepal to encourage more donations to help. As a travel journalist, Liu Yanting had visited Nepal just one week before the earthquake. Struck by the ruined and shattered state of the capital, Kathmandu, he felt heartache and launched a postcard donation campaign: “Just show me proof of your donation, and I’ll send you a postcard.” He hopes to use his own actions to encourage more people to lend a helping hand to those in need.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake on April 25 caused serious damage to Nepal, especially to the culturally listed Durbar Square, which was hit hard. Liu Yanting was in Nepal from April 9 to 16 for an interview. “This is a place I visited just eight days ago,” said Liu. Seeing the state of Durbar Square was heartbreaking, and he also worried about how the local residents could get through it.What struck me most during my visit there was the smiles and the simple, carefree expressions of the people.”

Wanting to help but not knowing where to start, Liu thought of turning the photos he took in Nepal into postcards, naming the collection “Nepal’s Last Look.”The first print run of 200 sets (eight postcards per set) were sold for NT$500 each, with all proceeds going to charity. He covered postage and printing costs himself. “I wanted to donate, but I don’t have much money, so I could only offer a small contribution.” Initially, he sought help only from friends and family, but unexpectedly, the first 200 sets were all purchased within a week. The NT$100,000 raised will be donated to three international relief organizations focusing on medical aid and emergency response.

Many friends and colleagues responded to Liu Yanting’s heartfelt postcard initiative, pooling funds together to print another 300 sets.They launched an online campaign offering postcards in exchange for donations. There is no minimum donation amount or required organization — just take a photo of your donation as proof, and you’ll receive a set of these charitable postcards. “I hope to be a bridge, encouraging more people to learn about Nepal and be willing to lend some help.”Liu Yanting said that over time, news about Nepal has gradually faded from Taiwanese media, but recovery and care still require a long journey ahead. Even a small effort might bring a glimmer of hope.
