A large group of people crammed into a small cabin for a long-haul flight of over ten hours can be quite miserable without mutual respect. Many have had bad experiences—like having the armrest on a middle seat taken over by neighbors or someone falling asleep on top of you. For the sake of flight quality, everyone should pay more attention to these details:
1. Keep your distance from the airplane lavatory
Don’t spend too much time in the bathroom, and don’t leave it a mess. For your own health, avoid joining the so-called Mile High Club—because you never know what germs lurk in there.
2. Keep an eye on your kids
Traveling with children can be exhausting, but it’s the parents’ responsibility to supervise them. To passengers annoyed by child noise, remember to communicate with the parents, not scold the child—you have no right to discipline someone else’s kid.
3. Be mindful of smells
Wearing too much cologne or perfume can be disturbing to fellow passengers. Also, be cautious about the food you bring onboard—avoid anything with a strong odor.
4. Think about how you’ll sleep
You might worry about accidentally leaning on your neighbor while asleep—that’s considerate of you. But don’t sleep face-down on the tray table—it’s a hassle for others who need to use the restroom.
5. The middle seat gets the armrest
Unlike window or aisle seats, the middle seat doesn’t have room to stretch—so let the person in the middle have the armrest.

6. Don’t assume your neighbor wants to chat
In fact, many just want a quiet flight.
7. Choose the right time to go to the bathroom
If the flight attendants are serving meals, stay seated. And getting up before the tray table is stowed is especially rude.
8. Don’t hog the overhead bin space
Cabin luggage should generally go in the overhead bin above your seat. Don’t take up someone else’s space. If you have two pieces, place one under the seat in front of you.
9. If you want to adjust your seat, do it slowly
Let the passenger behind you know before you recline, in case they have drinks or a laptop out. Also, make sure to return your seat to the upright position during meals.

10. Don’t get wasted
It’s okay to drink a little on a long flight, but many people overdo it—getting drunk, behaving oddly, and annoying their neighbors. Plus, getting up every 20 minutes to use the restroom is a pain.
11. Be polite to the flight attendants
Flight safety and service rules aren’t made by the flight attendants. Don’t take your frustrations out on them—it only causes delays.
