Potala Palace reached its current scale after multiple expansions. Originally, following its 17th-century expansion, it became the winter palace residence of successive Dalai Lamas and served as the center of Tibet’s combined political and religious rule. However, after 1959, Potala Palace retained only its religious functions, with no further political activities taking place there. It wasn’t until 1989 that an inventory of cultural relics began, revealing many precious treasures housed within the palace, turning it into an artistic sanctuary.
