Feeling hungry in the middle of the night? Besides fast food joints, convenience stores, and soy milk shops, are there any other options? How about a steaming bowl of beef noodles? On Luoyang Street in Wanhua District, Taipei, there are three 24-hour beef noodle shops, and another one on Yanji Street in the Eastern District that also never closes. Though it’s mainly to offset operational costs, it gives many night owls more choices when hunger strikes.

Most of the beef noodle shops on Luoyang Street in Wanhua District originally moved from Zhengzhou Street, including Jianhong Beef Noodles, Fuhong Beef Noodles (formerly Jianhong, now run by the owner’s brother), Lao Liu Beef Noodles, Xiao Wu Beef Noodles, and Longcheng Sichuan-style Beef Noodles. Among these five, Jianhong, Fuhong, and Xiao Wu are currently open 24 hours a day. A staff member at Fuhong Beef Noodles also revealed that they’ve been operating around the clock since moving to Luoyang Street. Many drivers, workers, and young people from Ximending often come here for a bite.

The nephew of the owner of Xiao Wu Beef Noodles said that staying open 24 hours is mainly to balance operational costs, while also allowing drivers and laborers to enjoy beef noodles late at night or early in the morning. He also noted that the late-night crowd is actually busier than the afternoon crowd, while business tends to be slower between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Jianhong Beef Noodles, Fuhong Beef Noodles, and Xiao Wu Beef Noodles all share two traits: first, you can enjoy beef noodles for less than 100 NT dollars (small bowl for 80 NT), which is rare in Taipei, and the portions of beef are generous. Second, every table comes with spicy beef tallow, spicy satay, garlic, and spicy bean paste, so diners can season to their liking — especially adding spicy beef tallow, which gives the noodles an extra rich, savory aroma.

Although the beef noodles from these shops may not be the most exquisite, getting a huge bowl for just 100 NT is still quite rare. For many working-class folks, this combo of affordability, big portions, and actual beef makes for great value.

Additionally, Wuqijiu Beef Noodles has several branches in Taipei, including one on Yanji Street that’s open 24 hours. However, the prices here are a bit higher compared to the shops on Luoyang Street (braised beef noodles and stewed beef noodles start at 130 NT).
