When it comes to the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo, Meguro River is definitely one of them. However, being located in the “city center,” it tends to be quite crowded, making it difficult for visitors to enjoy the blossoms in peace or take photos. In fact, there’s a lesser-known but equally stunning cherry blossom spot in Machida City, on the outskirts of Tokyo, that’s well worth a visit.
A section of the Enda River, which flows through the Naruse area of Machida City in Kanagawa Prefecture, is lined with about 400 cherry blossom trees stretching over 3 kilometers along both banks, much like Meguro River. The long branches of the cherry blossoms extend over the river, allowing visitors to view the fully bloomed flowers from eye level or even from a bird’s-eye view. Looking out at a distance, the blossoms line up like waves, creating an even more spectacular sight than Meguro River.
Recently, the cherry blossom season in the Tokyo area has reached its end. With a gentle breeze, petals flutter through the air, forming the so-called “sakura fubuki” (also commonly referred to as “cherry blossom rain” in Chinese-speaking regions)—a truly romantic scene. Notably, there are several spots along the walking paths of the Enda River where staircases lead down into the riverbed, offering a lower vantage point to watch the petals fall from above. The YouTube channel AQUA Geo Graphic recently filmed the sakura at the Enda River, capturing several stunning shots of the “sakura fubuki.” If you didn’t get the chance to see the blossoms this year, check out their videos and let your “eyes go on a trip.”
