When visiting tourist spots, many people try out quirky poses to grab attention for their photos. Japanese Twitter user @ru_ruru831 shared three photos taken on “Cat Island,” where the subject lies on the ground and uses cat food to lure felines onto their body, creating the effect of being "overwhelmed" by a horde of cats.

The tweet has since garnered over 200,000 likes and 40,000 retweets, showing that many netizens are eager for some “thick contact” (a Japanese term for intimate physical contact) with a bunch of cats. Some comments even read: “I’m allergic to cats, but I’d still like to experience this before I die,” or “I want to go out like this.” Even more humorous is a netizen who uploaded a picture of a skeleton, hinting that the subject eventually turned into one.

There are several places in Japan referred to as “Cat Islands,” such as Enoshima in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Maejima and Aojima in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture; Tashirojima in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture; and Aoshima in Usa City, Ehime Prefecture. The photos in this article are believed to have been taken on Aoshima. The cats on these “Cat Islands” are semi-feral, roaming freely around the islands and being fed by villagers and tourists from time to time.

Travelers planning to visit “Cat Islands” should take note that most of these islands are located in remote fishing villages. Aside from not entering residents' homes, visitors should also avoid private areas (especially farmland); feeding the cats is usually only allowed in designated spots, such as open areas near the docks.
