Osaka landmarks, the Tower of the Sun and the nearby Redhorse Osaka Wheel, have recently been illuminated to reflect the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic. A netizen posted images showing that, when viewed from a certain angle, the two landmarks lit up resemble a scene from a tokusatsu film where “a superhero fights a monster.” The post has garnered significant attention on social media.

The colors are so vivid, it feels incredibly surreal??? Like something out of a tokusatsu show??? pic.twitter.com/ZaiAfGw13M

Netizen @goddess19851021 noticed that the Tower of the Sun and Japan’s tallest Ferris wheel emit a magical green glow in the darkness. The striking and somewhat oppressive visuals evoke scenes from a “Superman” movie: the Tower of the Sun resembles a monster, and its sharply defined silhouette creates an eerie atmosphere; the Ferris wheel looks as if it could unleash a deadly beam at any moment. Also not to be overlooked is the beautiful night scenery around them, where a dense array of lights makes the impending battle feel ready to erupt at any second.

They remain locked in a standoff without moving???
The face beneath the Tower of the Sun looks surprisingly realistic from the side!!!

That’s all from the scene itself. pic.twitter.com/N512J9Nlc4

After seeing the post, other netizens immediately put their creative skills to work. The most popular idea was, of course, an EVA Angel attack, with the Ferris wheel teaming up with Unit-01 to fight off the invasion by the Tower of the Sun. Other edited images showcased impressive concepts and techniques, but the most memorable has to be the short video of both sides exchanging deadly beams.

As the COVID-19 situation begins to improve, several Osaka landmarks — including Tsutenkaku, the Tower of the Sun, and the Redhorse Osaka Wheel — have recently been illuminated to remind the public of the importance of staying home. The lights change to one of three colors based on the number of new confirmed cases: red (warning level), yellow (heightened caution), and green (safe).
