Landscape photographer Albert Dros, being Dutch, naturally adores his country’s flowers—especially tulips and the world-renowned Keukenhof Garden in Lisse. Due to the pandemic, this year marked the first time in 71 years that Keukenhof closed during its blooming season. Yet the gardeners never ceased their work, meticulously tending to the diverse array of flowers within.
Albert has photographed tulips countless times, from every imaginable angle. But he usually chooses locations on the outskirts of the city. In April this year, with tourists nowhere to be found, he knew the long-held dream of shooting an empty Keukenhof was finally possible. He reached out to the garden, and to his delight, gained easy access for his shoot.

▲ A rare tulip variety even the photographer had never seen before.
On the day Albert visited Keukenhof for his shoot, the sunlight was especially brilliant. With industrial and commercial activities largely halted, air quality improved dramatically, making this year’s tulips bloom with extraordinary vibrancy. It even made him forget his photography mission for a while, as he sat among the flowers and by the water for half an hour, listening to birdsong and breathing in the floral fragrance.

His photo expedition this time was undoubtedly a success, as he managed to capture scenes he’d never seen before. However, he mentioned his only regret was that the photos couldn’t record the scents of the moment.
