When the night sky is filled with stars, gazing up at the Milky Way is not just a romantic act, but also a pursuit. Many high-altitude areas in Taiwan offer a variety of beautiful starry scenes, and the “Zhushan Station” and “Duigao Yue Station,” quietly located within Alishan, are on the bucket list of many astrophotographers.

The empty curved platform, untouched late at night, mirrors the bright, scattered stars of the mountain. Breathing in the crisp, clean air, it feels like a celestial railway station lost in the forested mountains, waiting alone for passengers who never arrive. Its unique, poetic beauty attracts stargazers from far and wide, many of whom stay for hours, seeking the perfect moment to capture star trails and photograph serene, beautiful corners of Taiwan.

The Alishan Forest Railway's Zhushan Line is the first mountain railway built in Taiwan. Starting from Alishan New Station, the route often passes through sea of clouds, and ends at Zhushan Station, which sits at an altitude of 2,451 meters—the highest train station in Taiwan—dedicated to taking visitors up to Zhushan for sunrise viewing.

The Zhushan Line passes by Duigao Yue Station, whose platform-side observation deck offers expansive views and plenty of space. It’s also a great spot for watching the sunrise. In addition to its wooden walkways laid with sleepers, the area boasts hidden seasonal charms: red maple leaves in autumn, cherry blossoms in spring, starry skies in summer, and snow in winter.

Alishan Railway Station is home to a series of “Milky Way Railways.” Aside from Zhushan Station and Duigao Yue Station, Zhaoping Station and Erwanping Station are also popular spots for railway-based stargazing photography. Hop on the last Alishan park shuttle bus, or hike up the sunrise trail for about an hour to secure your spot. If you’ve still got energy to spare, chase the sunrise for an added thrill and feel the full wonder that Alishan has to offer.
