The Central Epidemic Command Center announced on April 12 that there were 3 new COVID-19 (formerly known as Wuhan pneumonia) cases (Cases 386 to 388) in Taiwan, bringing the total to 388 cases, including 2 imported ones. Although the number of daily cases has been in single digits for several consecutive days, the command center cautiously stated that the situation cannot yet be considered under control.

As for the hotel employee who tested positive, 92 workplace contacts and 4 family contacts have been traced. All those tested so far have come back negative, but testing is still ongoing.

[Domestic Epidemic Situation]

The three confirmed cases today include 2 imported and 1 local case. The local case is a man in his 20s (Case 386), who is a housemate of Case 195 (imported from the U.S.). He had allergy symptoms and was listed as a contact after Case 195’s diagnosis. He underwent home quarantine and tested positive today. Related contacts are still under investigation.

The command center said the two new imported cases today are a man in his 40s (Case 387) and a woman in her 40s (Case 388). Case 387 traveled to the U.S. for work before February 20 and began experiencing coughing and sore throat on March 25. He self-medicated and did not seek medical attention. He was tested at the airport upon returning to Taiwan on April 10 and tested positive today.

Case 388 is the wife of Case 358. The couple traveled together to the U.K. to visit relatives on January 13. After arriving in Taiwan on April 2, she developed loss of taste and smell during the home quarantine period and sought medical attention on April 3, when she was tested. She tested positive today.

[International Epidemic Situation]

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. has exceeded 520,000, with over 20,000 deaths. In New York, large pits are being dug on islands to hold numerous unidentified bodies.

Spain has over 160,000 confirmed cases, the highest in Europe. In the southern hemisphere, Australia has surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases and 54 deaths. Tourists were seen not wearing masks and gathering at the popular Bondi Beach, prompting authorities to close the beach to reduce gatherings. New Zealand has over 1,000 confirmed cases and 4 deaths. Following restrictions on people’s movements, the epidemic is expected to be preliminarily brought under control.
