The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, and Taiwan has set an example in epidemic prevention. Everyone conscientiously wears masks, especially when using public transportation. On the high-speed rail, two adorable figures appeared — two little girls around 4 years old who not only obediently wore masks but also donned the protective goggles prepared by their mother while waiting on the platform to board the high-speed train.

Don’t be fooled by their young age — after seeing everyone wearing masks on the news and on the streets, and with some explanation from adults, they understood how scary the virus can be. They know to wear masks to protect themselves when going out and also frequently wash their hands or use hand sanitizer.

The two little girls, fully geared up for their high-speed rail trip, caught the attention of many passersby who complimented how cute they were.

On the platform, the girls could also sense an atmosphere of self-discipline. There was none of their usual giggling; instead, they held hands obediently and followed their mother’s instructions while waiting for the arrival of the high-speed train.

In the past, kids were most excited to eat their favorite candies and cookies on the high-speed rail, feeling like they’d arrive at their destination in no time. But not anymore. Both high-speed rail and regular trains now prohibit eating and drinking on board. After boarding, the children obediently stayed in their seats as previously discussed with their mother, refraining from eating anything.

Trains under the pandemic aren’t completely empty, but during certain times, it’s entirely possible to find entire carriages vacant. Overall, passenger volume has dropped significantly. In January 2020, there were 6,230,650 high-speed rail passengers. By February, after the outbreak, that number fell to 3,968,432, and in March, it further declined to 3,529,935 passengers.
