The famous Jiangnan towers of China’s Tang Dynasty symbolize the glorious achievements of ancient royalty, showcasing extraordinary elegance through exquisite craftsmanship and embodying the cultural essence of Chinese architecture. And such architecture can also be found in Taipei — this Fu Garden restaurant, located near Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, was once a private dining spot for political and business elites.

Nestled within Linyi Street, the exterior of Fu Garden Restaurant resembles the three great towers of Jiangnan. With no prominent signboard, it is an extremely low-profile eatery. It was once one of the highest-end restaurants in Taiwan, serving state banquet-level cuisine, and was ranked among Taiwan’s top three luxury shark fin restaurants alongside Ding Shang Restaurant and Xin Tong Le Shark Fin Restaurant. Fu Garden’s delicious offerings were also honored with the “French Gastronomy Medal” awarded by the French Culinary Association.

The founder of Fu Garden Restaurant was a legendary figure in Taiwan’s culinary scene. The restaurant’s Jiangsu-Zhejiang cuisine was highly favored by celebrities and frequently hosted state banquets as well as receptions for foreign dignitaries and diplomats, including former U.S. presidents, British prime ministers, and former presidents of the Soviet Union. Due to this, most Taipei residents had no idea what lay behind its unassuming façade.

In 1992, the founder invested 300 million NTD over three years to construct a 1,500-ping building made entirely of hinoki cypress, modeled after a Suzhou-style garden. This included a three-story octagonal tower and a five-story square pavilion, with an art building in between connecting the two main structures, displaying authentic calligraphy works by renowned artist Qi Gong. Fu Garden Restaurant quietly closed in 2014.
