Last Saturday (the 28th) morning, the Kanto region of Japan was suddenly hit by a heavy snowfall. Coincidentally, it’s also the time when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. As snow fell on the already fully bloomed cherry blossoms, petals and snowflakes swirled together with every gust of wind, creating a truly stunning “cherry blossom snow” scene. Although many residents are staying indoors due to the pandemic, a few people ventured to nearby parks to capture this rare spectacle.

According to local media, the last time Tokyo experienced snow after cherry blossoms were in full bloom was back in 1969 — a full 51 years ago. While it's not uncommon for Tokyo to get snow in March, it's quite rare to have as much as 1 cm of snow accumulation in late March. Records show that the last time Tokyo had heavy snow at the end of March was 32 years ago, in 1988.

Forecasts indicated that cherry blossoms in Tokyo would be in full bloom by March 22. Though some netizens said that several days of strong winds before the snowfall had blown away many blossoms, the persistently cold weather indirectly extended the blooming period, giving people more time to enjoy the flowers. However, some also lamented that such a breathtaking sight might only be seen once in a lifetime.
