The “Moonlight Treasure Box” from the Journey to the West movie is a familiar scene in many people’s memories, and as the upcoming Mid-Autumn gift box season approaches, hoteliers have kicked off their pre-order campaign early. Featuring handmade fillings with imported ingredients and packaged in exquisitely carved wooden treasure boxes, these gift sets exude luxury. Orders can be placed from now until September 9.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the three traditional festivals for family reunions, has seen mooncakes evolve far beyond their conventional image—both in filling and packaging, now leaning towards refined aesthetics. Last year, Junpin Hotel’s music box mooncake gift set received high praise. This year, drawing inspiration from underwater treasures, they present the “Moonlight Treasure Box.” The sturdy, intricately carved wooden box symbolizes a priceless treasure chest, resembling the opening of a gold ingot to reveal mooncakes filled with French chocolate ganache, all encased in gold-leaf-coated pastry, echoing the mythical tales of the Mid-Autumn Festival and adding an extra layer of mystery.

The “Moonlight Treasure Box” includes two flavors: “Favna Chocolate” and “French Chestnut Custard.” Both use imported ingredients from France. The “French Chocolate” comes from the top-tier French chocolate brand Valrhona, renowned for using only Criollo cocoa beans, which make up just 3% of the world’s total cocoa production. Chef Xie Mingsong of Junpin selected Valrhona’s Guanaja variety with 70% cocoa concentration to craft the filling, which also hides pine nuts inside. The mooncake surface is dusted with gold powder, sparkling like a treasure. The “French Chestnut Custard” uses Sabaton chestnuts, known as the “LV of chestnuts,” from southern France. Slow-cooked to perfection, the filling is further enriched with traditional Chinese custard, offering a fusion of Eastern and Western flavors. The peach-pink outer crust is naturally tinted with red food coloring, accented with bow embossing and gold powder, making the mooncakes look like beautiful works of art.

The “Moonlight Treasure Box” mooncake gift set is available for limited pre-order from now until September 9. Each box is NT$2,500 (containing three each of French Chestnut Custard and Favna Chocolate), with a limited quantity of 400 boxes—available while supplies last. Orders can be picked up three days after placing them. Order hotline: (02) 2181-9999 ext. 3372.
