Think grilled corn only comes in the soy-sauce-flavored version from night markets? Mexican grilled corn is a whole different story. At Café Habana, the corn is slathered with butter, mayonnaise, sour cream (Sour Cream), Mexican Cotija cheese, and a touch of chili powder before being grilled. The result is a rich, cheesy aroma paired with the natural sweetness of the corn. It can also be drizzled with lime juice for a tangy twist, making it a must-order signature dish for all customers.

The richly flavored Mexican grilled corn is simply irresistible.

Located in the bustling SoHo district, Café Habana is easily spotted by its eye-catching blue signage. While prices are quite reasonable by local standards, the small space and no-reservations policy often lead to long lines. But almost everyone is here for the Mexican grilled corn — just look at how nearly every customer walks out with one in hand to see its appeal. The menu also features Cuban and Mexican specialties that are popular with both locals and travelers.

Café Habana offers separate brunch and dinner menus, as well as a takeout section.

The Cuban Sandwich is the dish that best reflects the restaurant’s name. It originated among Cuban workers who migrated to the U.S., made with Cuban bread that has a texture similar to French bread. The bread is cut into about 10 cm pieces, spread with mustard, and layered with tender roasted pork, smoked ham, and Swiss cheese. The specially marinated pork is especially irresistible and memorable.

Additionally, Mexican soft tacos (Burrittos) and Skirt Steak are also popular menu items. Skirt Steak comes from the diaphragm area between the cow’s chest and belly, featuring coarse muscle fibers but enough fat and marbling to become tender and flavorful when grilled — making this less common cut increasingly popular in the U.S.
