Tchaikovsky’s life, filled with legendary love stories, will be presented through his “Serenade,” “Violin Concerto,” and a classical ballet interpretation by Taipei Chamber Ballet. The performance will take place tomorrow (4th) at 19:30 at Taichung’s Zhongshan Hall. The choreography is by Yu Neng-sheng, deputy artistic director of the Graz Opera Ballet in Austria, and features soloists Canila Bogdan Stefan and Djmaru Cristina Alexandra from the Romanian National Ballet, along with local dancers Cheng You-ci, Liao Yi-?, Gao Yong-yu, Zhuang Shi-xian, and Lin Bo-ru. Combining Tchaikovsky’s poignant and romantic music with classical ballet, the show unfolds in five acts depicting Tchaikovsky’s experiences of family, friendship, and love — including his unique 13-year platonic relationship with Madame von Meck, during which they never met, making it a one-of-a-kind romance in music history.

The renowned Russian composer Tchaikovsky, whose music often carried a touch of melancholy, also led a life filled with legendary love stories. Many of Tchaikovsky’s compositions were written under the influence of various emotional experiences. This ballet focuses on different aspects of his life — exploring his relationships with family, friends, lovers, and the rumored same-sex affections — structured into acts titled: “Motherly Love” – dependent love, “Women” – longed-for love, “Marriage” – love without fruition, “Madame von Meck” – platonic love, and “Same-sex Love” – idealized love.

Among these, Tchaikovsky’s relationship with Madame von Meck began in 1877 and spanned 13 years, involving over 1,100 letters exchanged about music, musicians, religion, and personal feelings. Through their correspondence, Madame von Meck came to understand Tchaikovsky’s financial struggles and deeply admired his musical talent, leading her to offer him an annual stipend of 6,000 rubles — equivalent to over NT$2.7 million today. However, both agreed never to meet in person. With this financial support, Tchaikovsky devoted himself to composing music, dedicating his Symphony No. 4, completed in 1878, to Madame von Meck. In 1890, Madame von Meck announced that she was facing bankruptcy and had to cease her financial assistance, also ending their 13-year-long correspondence. Deeply affected, Tchaikovsky composed his Symphony No. 6, which premiered in 1893, just before his untimely death due to illness.

Beyond his famous ballets such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky composed numerous other pieces suitable for dance adaptations. For this production, the music of the “Serenade” and “Violin Concerto” has been selected. Through their infinitely imaginative melodies, the elegant and graceful lines of classical ballet, combined with dramatic intensity, the ballet interprets and depicts the emotional journey of Tchaikovsky.
