This October, Sun Moon Lake is buzzing with excitement. In addition to the five consecutive holiday nights of the “2012 Sun Moon Lake International Fireworks Music Festival,” the Taomi Community in Puli Township will hold a one-day “Dancing with Butterflies” butterfly-watching tour on October 24. The event will feature guided tours by professional interpreters, a butterfly-themed meal cooked with plants that serve as butterfly food or nectar sources, activities for planting butterfly food plants and nectar plants, as well as hands-on DIY crafts. The event is limited to 80 participants and is completely free of charge.

Between 1960 and 1975, Puli, blessed with ideal natural conditions, was not only a place where butterflies filled the skies, but also home to the world’s largest butterfly processing industry. However, economic development led to the destruction of butterfly habitats, and the abundance of butterflies in Puli has since declined. Since 2011, the New Homeland Cultural and Educational Foundation has focused on butterflies, using methods such as field research, educational programs, and habitat restoration to revive Puli’s status as the “Butterfly Kingdom.” A survey conducted from April 2011 to March 2012 on the butterfly resources along Puli’s butterfly-watching trails found that the area is home to over 210 species of butterflies—half of all butterfly species in Taiwan—with 137 species found in the Taomi Community alone.

To allow visitors to take part in the experience of reviving Puli’s Butterfly Kingdom, the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration and the Taomi New Homeland Cultural and Educational Foundation have jointly organized the Taomi Butterfly-Watching Tour. The event will take place in the Taomi Eco Village and include guided tours along the community’s butterfly-watching trails led by professional guides, as well as activities like crafting a frog shrine, game challenges, and fun butterfly-themed DIY crafts in collaboration with local Puli woodworking workshops.
