For those who have experienced kayaking, heavy sailboats, and other water activities at Kaohsiung’s Xingda Port, are you still enchanted by the joy of gliding across the water and feeling the cool sea breeze? Thanks to the calm waters of Xingda Fishing Port, which are suitable for water activities all year round, the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau is working to establish the area as a training and promotion base for heavy sailboat sports. Starting now, in collaboration with Aletheia University, they are offering group one-day “Happy Ocean Leisure Activity” courses and a five-day basic and beginner coastal sailing course for heavy sailboats. The heavy sailboat-related courses are certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). Upon completing the course and passing the certification exam, participants can earn ASA101 and ASA103 certifications, allowing water activity enthusiasts not only to enjoy a rare heavy sailboat experience but also to gain internationally recognized credentials through the courses.

The newly launched “Happy Ocean Leisure Activity Program” includes three courses: platform canoe happy cruising, basic small sailboat, and happy exploration heavy sailboat courses. Each course lasts one day, with main content covering sailboat introductions, equipment maintenance, basic operations, capsizing self-rescue, and sailing techniques. Course fees range from NT$1,800 to NT$2,500. As for the “Heavy Sailboat Basic and Beginner Coastal Sailing Course,” it spans five days, including one day of theory and four days of practical training. The main content includes the history of sailing, boarding etiquette, international collision regulations, maritime knots, and navigation principles and techniques.

The Heavy Sailboat Basic and Beginner Coastal Sailing Course is an internationally certified sailing program authorized by the American Sailing Association (ASA), one of the world’s three major yacht certification bodies. Upon completing the course and passing the certification exam, participants can obtain ASA101 and ASA103 certifications—internationally recognized qualifications highly sought after by those looking to rent boats abroad or become yacht tour guides. Since its launch in July this year, six sessions have been held, with 30 students earning completion certificates, including 12 who have obtained the ASA101 and ASA103 certifications.
