To allow parents and children to experience farming life firsthand, the Agriculture and Food Agency under the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, will host the “Big and Little Farmers’ Rice Planting Fun” rice planting event on March 16 and 17 in Xihu Township, Miaoli County. There will be one morning session and one afternoon session each day, totaling four sessions, with 100 participants per session. A total of 400 children and adults will be invited to Xihu Township in Miaoli County to plant rice, enjoy farm life, at a cost of NT$150 per person.

Due to changes in dietary habits, many people no longer consume rice as their staple food. To help the public rediscover traditional rice culture and establish correct concepts about the nutrition of rice-based diets, the Agriculture and Food Agency has planned a rice planting event where visitors will learn about Taiwan’s rice from organic farming expert Zhang Zhijie from Miaoli County. Participants will experience planting rice in organic paddies, make delicious, fragrant rice balls with their own hands, and even create DIY creative rice paintings. In addition, children will be taken to see rural landscapes and traditional sanheyuan (courtyard houses) rarely seen in urban areas, with interactive games and lucky draws on site. Registration is open now until March 12, and families who sign up will also receive organic commemorative rice. For registration details, please visit: www.coa.gov.tw/event/20130218/index.php.
