No matter how hard you try, you might still find yourself lacking someone who can fill that inner emptiness. What could be more wonderful than finding your ideal soulmate to fill that void through a chance encounter? The Shoe Sonata in Paris is just such a heartwarming romantic film that makes dreams come true. Set in Paris, France, the film tells the story of a female writer living in Paris who accidentally breaks the heel of her high heel while walking and has an unexpected encounter with a young and handsome photographer from Japan. The two, who hit it off instantly, spark a romance within just three days.

The film boasts a stellar cast featuring an unbeatable combination of popular stars. It stars Miho Nakayama, who currently resides in Paris, and Japanese heartthrob Eiji Wentz. This is their first collaboration, and they vividly portray the emotional journey of the two protagonists—from dealing with past heartbreaks to eventually relying on each other. Their captivating performances, full of chemistry, nuanced expressions, and acting finesse, deeply resonate with audiences and significantly elevate the film. Additionally, the rapidly rising stars Mirei Kiritani and Tsuyoshi Abe also play pivotal roles; their subplot adds another highlight to the movie.

A Classic Love Drama by Yoshiko Shibata and Shunji Iwai

Directed by Yoshiko Shibata, a renowned screenwriter known for creating numerous high-rating Japanese dramas such as Long Vacation and Beautiful Life, the film is produced and supervised by acclaimed Japanese director Shunji Iwai, who also oversaw the cinematography. This dynamic duo, masters of romantic literary storytelling, takes viewers into a foreign yet romantic atmosphere through timeless dialogue and picturesque imagery. Especially notable is the reunion of Miho Nakayama and Shunji Iwai after seventeen years since their classic collaboration in the Japanese film Love Letter, which has generated considerable buzz for the film.

The Shoe Sonata in Paris was entirely filmed on location in Paris, France, making it a rare large-scale production for a Japanese film. Iconic landmarks such as the Seine River, the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe all appear in the film, and even indoor scenes were shot in a Parisian apartment, with every detail exuding rich French charm. Just watching the film can make anyone feel as if they’re immersed in a romantic Parisian love affair.

A Mature Woman–Younger Man Romance Begins with That Pair of High Heels

Yashinori Hachigami (played by Eiji Wentz), a young and handsome photographer, travels to France with his younger sister Reina (Mirei Kiritani). However, upon arriving in Paris, Reina ditches him to meet her boyfriend on her own. Lost and unfamiliar with the city, Yashinori gets lost by the Seine River and unexpectedly meets a local freelance female writer, Akane (Miho Nakayama). Their first meeting is less than pleasant, but Akane accidentally steps on his passport lying on the ground and also breaks the heel of her own shoe. Yashinori kindly fixes her high heel, and in gratitude, she leaves her contact information, offering help if he ever needs it.

Unable to reach his sister, Yashinori calls Akane and the two agree to have dinner together. After a few drinks, Yashinori escorts the intoxicated Akane home but forgets the name of his hotel and ends up having to stay at her place for the night. Meanwhile, his sister finally reunites with her long-lost boyfriend (Tsuyoshi Abe), but his attitude begins to subtly shift...

Amid the romantic ambiance of the City of Light, Yashinori and Akane grow closer. However, Yashinori quietly discovers that Akane harbors deep, unresolved emotional scars. As they talk through the night, sharing both thoughts and feelings, their mutual misunderstandings gradually fade. Why did Akane choose to live alone in Paris? Should Yashinori continue pursuing photography? Embracing each other in a foreign land, the two begin to see eye to eye, unwilling to part again...

The next day, Yashinori accompanies Akane on an interview as her photographer. Throughout the day, Akane wears the very same broken high heel, muttering to herself from time to time: “I’ll have to buy a new pair...” With Yashinori soon returning to Japan, will the two, whose hearts are connected by a single pair of high heels, be able to hold hands and walk forward together?
