Born in 1949 into a farming family in Taichung, Hsieh Chun-teh dropped out after one semester in the Textile Department at Shalu Senior Industrial Vocational School in Taichung County. Driven by a passion and longing for modern art, the 18-year-old bravely left his hometown alone and ventured to the colorful metropolis of Taipei, embarking on a life journey of viewing the world through the viewfinder. Immersed in the fervent era of modernist upheaval in the 1960s and 1970s, the newly arrived Hsieh Chun-teh in the north combined the documentary and critical spirit of photography with experimental techniques that transcended reality, expressing his trembling, restless, and intense emotions. Enhanced by backlit shots, defocused images, or unconventional and peculiar compositions, he presented a sense of modern consciousness that was nihilistic, absurd, and uncertain — an influence that persists to this day.

In the spring of 2013, Hsieh Chun-teh chose the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts to hold his first and most comprehensive retrospective solo exhibition. Through the planning of this exhibition, the museum aimed to provide a holistic review of Hsieh Chun-teh’s remarkable over 50-year creative career, showcasing the fantastical world suffused with a faint glow in his imagery. To fully present this bold, distinctive artistic life of the photographer Hsieh Chun-teh, the exhibition traces from his early entry into the photography world in the early 1960s with the "First Solo Exhibition," to "Homeland" centered around his fellow countrymen and land, "Faces of Our Time" documenting portraits of iconic figures of the era, "Drifting Without Borders" exploring the sentiments of wanderers abroad, the "Life" series intertwining love, desire, and death, all the way to the newly unveiled installation work "Skyfire" presented for the first time in this exhibition.
