The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, together with various overseas offices, bicycle and airline companies, has launched a one-year online campaign titled “Bike Tours in Taiwan” from now until March 31, 2014. The initiative compiles creative cycling routes and information on bike lanes throughout Taiwan to provide references for both domestic and international cyclists. It also offers discounts on bicycle rentals and purchases, as well as a group-joining platform. Cyclists from around the world are welcome to experience “Taiwan’s Cycling Trails” and can receive event gifts. Those who share their travel stories are also eligible to join a lucky draw.

The event website is available in three languages: Chinese, English, and Japanese. Based on riding intensity, it recommends several routes for cyclists, including the more challenging island-loop route, the Sun Moon Lake bike path and surrounding routes — rated among the world’s top ten most beautiful by CNNGO, the challenge route up to Wuling at 3,275 meters above sea level in Taroko, the cycling routes in Penghu — recognized by the renowned travel website Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top ten most beautiful islands, and the Pearl Route that connects indigenous villages in Hualien and Taitung.

By joining the event website as a member, anyone who participates in a group ride can receive an event gift — a prepaid EasyCard. Those who upload and share their travel stories can get an exclusive cycling headband. Renting a bike at designated shops comes with a 12% discount, and those satisfied with the trial ride can enjoy a 10% discount when purchasing a bicycle. Foreign travelers who buy a bicycle for NT$3,000 or more can also directly apply for a tax refund at the shop. In addition, members who upload their travel stories to the event website can not only share their Taiwan travel experiences with fellow cyclists but also enter raffles for accommodation vouchers and Taiwan-exclusive bicycles.
