In recent days, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19, commonly known as Wuhan pneumonia) has surged dramatically, and with the severe pandemic situation in various countries, many nations have successively implemented strict entry-exit controls and quarantine measures. This wave of global lockdowns began with many airlines suspending flights, as numerous European countries also imposed movement restrictions on their citizens. Bars, restaurants, and shopping malls were all ordered to close, and there were also many city and town lockdowns.
Many international students, exchange students, and working holidaymakers from Europe and other regions have recently been scrambling to find flights back to Taiwan. Additionally, the traditional tomb-sweeping travel rush around early April will pose further challenges to Taiwan’s epidemic prevention efforts.
Moreover, for all individuals entering Taiwan from Europe between March 3 and 14, the Central Epidemic Command Center has strengthened retrospective testing. Upon returning, it is essential to strictly adhere to 14 days of self-health management. Students are advised to temporarily suspend in-person classes, and working professionals are encouraged to work from home if possible.
The Central Epidemic Command Center has also proactively cross-referenced the contact information of all individuals entering from Europe with the National Health Insurance system to identify those who sought medical treatment during this period and exhibited pneumonia or upper respiratory symptoms. These individuals will be notified via SMS to comply with relevant testing measures. For all incoming travelers, follow-up phone calls will be made by a call center to remind those with symptoms to wear masks and seek medical attention promptly, while also providing their travel history.
