The “Taichung City Children’s Art Festival,” organized by the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, has entered its 7th year. This year’s event is themed “Creativity, Classics, and Artful Play.” Running from today until April 14, the program includes the Children’s Art Train, the Children’s Art Grand Garden, a major performance by the Paper Windmill Theater Troupe, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts’ “Artistic Vision,” “Taichung My Home,” and the nationwide premiere of the “Paper Windmill Taiwan Animals & Insects Creative Exhibition.” A massive 70-meter-long, 12-meter-high “Whale-Themed Pavilion” has been set up to allow all children to step inside the belly of a giant whale, offering an immersive deep-sea-like spatial experience.

In addition to previous venues such as the Wenxin Forest Park and the Round-the-City Outdoor Theater, this year also adopts a “Children’s Art Train” touring model. It invites high-quality local arts and cultural groups in Taichung—including the Little Frog Theater Troupe, Open Theater Troupe, Stubborn Stone Theater Troupe, Childlike Theater Troupe, and Extreme Physical Dance Troupe—to perform at the Fengyuan Huludun Cultural Center, Taiping Tun District Arts and Culture Center, and Qingshui Port District Arts Center. During the Children’s Day holiday period, these arts groups, along with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and Only Puppet Children’s Theater Troupe, will move to Wenxin Forest Park to jointly present the “Children’s Art Grand Garden.” In addition to performances, interactive booths will be set up for public participation. The content spans music, dance, and drama, aiming to offer children a brand-new artistic experience.

The main venue, the Round-the-City Outdoor Theater, will host three consecutive nights from April 4 to 6 at 7:30 PM, featuring three different plays by the Paper Windmill Theater Troupe. These include the beloved classic children’s productions “The Story of Chicken City,” “Wu Song Fights the Tiger,” and “Paper Windmill’s Fantasia,” allowing children to enjoy a full treat during the Children’s Day holiday.

“Artistic Vision” at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts selects masterpieces from its collection, including works by renowned Taiwanese artists such as Shiy De-jinn’s “Boy in Red,” Huang Tu-shui’s “Water Buffalo Group,” and Hong Rui-lin’s “Hope”... Paired with fun activities, it helps children get closer to fine arts. Additionally, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the museum has launched a special project using five major Taiwanese paintings—Liao Chi-chun’s “Day of Remembrance,” Wu Long-jong’s “White Doves Bringing Auspiciousness,” Lee Chun-hsien’s “Eighteen Stars,” Wu Hao’s “Inspiration,” and Chan Chien-yu’s “Double Happiness and Prosperity”—to create large-scale 3D puzzles. Fun activities paired with actor-led introductions help children better understand the historical background of the artworks.

Nine major departments and bureaus in Taichung, under the concept of “Taichung My Home,” have set up installation artworks to guide children through the city’s “construction, culture, and future.” Examples include the National Taichung Opera House, Taiwan Tower, Rainbow Art Park, Taichung Park, Houli Horse Ranch, Gaomei Wetlands, Mazu Pilgrimage, confectionery culture, the BRT rapid transit system, Cross Axis Park, and the eco-friendly city. These collectively showcase the diverse facets of Taichung in a compact way and encourage children to care more about the land where they grow up. After the Children’s Art Festival concludes, all exhibits will be moved to the City Government Hall to give the public more opportunities to learn about Taichung.

The “Paper Windmill Taiwan Animals & Insects Creative Exhibition,” curated by the Paper Windmill Cultural and Educational Foundation, will begin its tour in Taichung. To provide children with a uniquely imaginative perspective, the exhibition creatively presents insects in various scales. Aside from the “Paper Windmill Taiwan Animals & Insects Creative Exhibition,” which requires paid admission, all other events are free.
