With spring in full bloom and the sea a brilliant blue, the northeastern waters are blessed with the unique ecological resources of Guishan Island, making it home to Taiwan’s most renowned whale-watching activities. From April 13 to May 26, Yilan County and the Northeast Coast & Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration will jointly launch special whale-watching packages, including 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 tours that combine whale watching, island circumnavigation, and island landing. Prices start as low as NT$700 per person.

The waters around Guishan Island boast abundant whale and dolphin resources, with up to 17 species spotted in the area — a truly remarkable number. The most common include spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and false killer whales. The optimal time for whale and dolphin watching runs from April to the end of September. This collaborative effort among local operators offers a series of discounted packages, including a 3-in-1 experience (whale watching, circumnavigation, and island landing) for just NT$1,200 per person, and a 2-in-1 experience (whale watching and circumnavigation) for NT$700 per person. For children aged 3 to 12, the 3-in-1 package is NT$800 and the 2-in-1 is NT$500, while children under 3 only need to pay an insurance fee of NT$300. Professional guides on board provide themed commentary on topics such as “Cultural Guishan,” “Conservation of Guishan,” and “Whales & Dolphins of Guishan,” ensuring visitors gain a comprehensive understanding of the marine ecosystem.

In addition, during the “2013 Whale Magic Voyage” whale-watching event in the waters around Guishan Island, every Wednesday during the activity period has been designated as a “Charity Voyage Day” (April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22), with a total of six trips available. Each trip has a free quota of 70 people, and registration is through school recommendations. For reservations and inquiries, contact the Yilan County Whale Watching Promotion Association at 03-9770606.
