When older generations talk about Beitou, the most memorable highlights are the local trio of treasures: hot springs, traditional restaurant cuisine, and nostalgic live music (nagashi), but as time has passed, only the hot springs remain widely known. Want to relive Beitou’s glorious past? From May 17 to May 19, the Beitou Traditional Restaurant Cuisine Culture and Food Festival will be held on the south side of Xinbeitou MRT Station. Over the three-day event, in addition to nostalgic nagashi performances, Master Huang Dexing, a national treasure chef of traditional restaurant cuisine, will demonstrate plating techniques. There will also be mini versions of signature dishes such as Golden Sand Tofu, Crispy One-Bite Delights, Sakura Shrimp Fried Rice, and Golden Sand Shrimp Balls—all available for just 10 NT coins. On May 18 and 19, there will also be guided cultural tours of Beitou led by professional guides from the Beitou Cultural Foundation, allowing visitors to rediscover Beitou’s culture through all five senses.

Exploring Beitou isn’t just about visiting classic sites like the historic Beitou Hot Spring Museum. This year’s event will feature not only the most nostalgic nagashi performances and open-air screenings of retro films that take you back to the grandmother’s era, but also a comeback performance by Zhou Zihan, the original singer of “Kiss and Tears.” The main highlight—traditional restaurant cuisine—will invite Master Huang Dexing, hailed as the “grandmaster of Taiwanese cuisine,” and food expert Liang Youxiang to demonstrate professional plating techniques. They’ll show how simple ingredients can be transformed into stunningly beautiful dishes using creative presentation skills. Additionally, from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM on May 18 and 19, the “10-NT-Coin Gourmet King” event will offer delicately portioned traditional dishes, each available for just 10 NT coins. What normally costs 10,000 to 18,000 NT at restaurants can now be enjoyed in its entirety for just 100 NT.

Hot spring accommodations in the Beitou area are also offering various promotions to complement the event. Two-Person Inn is offering a traditional restaurant cuisine set meal featuring five dishes, including Pan-Fried Anchovy and Duck Egg, Fermented Tofu and Wine-Lees Marinated Pork Ribs, and Scallion Oil Chicken, all for a discounted price of 380 NT. Weekday stay vouchers are also available starting at a 76% discount. Lih Banquet Hall – Beitou Branch is offering discounts on Hong Kong-style dim sum, including Shrimp Dumplings for 58 NT and Steamed Twelve-Flowing-Sand Buns for 71 NT, along with classic Cantonese dishes all priced uniformly at 168 NT per dish. Shuimei Hot Spring Resort is offering discounts on stay vouchers, hot spring entry tickets, dining vouchers, and spa vouchers, with prices starting as low as 55% off. The Spring Hotel is offering deals such as the second chef’s recommended set meal for just 15 NT, 15% off on semi-self-service afternoon tea, and up to 50% off on weekday stays.

During the event, visitors who want to explore Beitou on their own can check out must-visit spots like the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, Beitou Library, Beitou Cultural Museum, Meiting, Geothermal Valley, and the Civic Center. Additionally, Beitou’s unique vintage transport option—motorbike taxi service—is a distinctive local cultural experience. A few motorbike taxi services are still available near Xinbeitou MRT Station. Just agree on a price, and you can enjoy a unique way of sightseeing around Beitou without walking—zipping around the hills on a motorbike.
