After eagerly awaiting warm weather with blue skies and white clouds, it's the perfect time to enjoy the summer vibe under the sunshine and sea breeze. The International Sand Sculpture Art Festival in Fulong saw a huge influx of visitors last weekend who came to admire world-class sand sculptures. Not only did the event surpass 100,000 visitors, but the simultaneously held “Domestic Creative Sand Sculpture Competition” also captivated audiences with the exquisite skills of 17 participating teams. The champion team, “Genie Squad,” impressed with their piece “Make a Wish,” which echoed the theme “Childhood Memories” and conveyed children’s boundless and imaginative creativity.

The team “Hua Gang Gang,” which won the “Domestic Creative Sand Sculpture Competition” in 2011 and earned an “Honorable Mention” last year, made their third consecutive attempt this year. However, they took a different approach this time by choosing the theme “Shadows of Midnight,” using horror, darkness, and nightmarish elements to depict “childhood memories,” offering the public a unique visual experience. Additionally, the Taipei-based team “Old Wang’s Dream,” whose captain shared that his family participated in a similar event back in 1995—when his mother, despite suffering from serious illness, persevered through the entire activity just to fulfill the dream of creating a sand sculpture together as a family—only rushing to the hospital after the competition ended. That memory remains unforgettable, so this year they re-entered the competition hoping to recreate the childhood home of yesteryear with their grandson, passing on the sand sculpture memories to the next generation. Other creatively outstanding works include the “Endless Artistry” team from Xuanzang University’s Department of Art and Creative Design, who presented a “Memory Wonder Can” representing childhood, and the “Happy Home” team’s “Sweet Memories of Happiness.” A special highlight was the “Ibby Ducks” team’s creation—depicting the giant inflatable yellow duck that recently gained fame in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour—allowing Taiwanese visitors to see it up close without leaving the country. Endless creativity aims to build a uniquely Taiwanese kingdom of sand sculpture.

The “2013 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Art Festival” runs until June 30, with “Family Sand Sculpture DIY” activities held every holiday. To complement the Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival, Fullon Hotels has launched the “Come and Experience the Sand Sculpture Art Festival” special accommodation package, including a sand sculpture creation experience and a themed afternoon tea. In addition, to promote eco-friendly cycling, they’ve introduced the “Building Childhood Memories” deal, offering a sand sculpture creation experience and bicycle vouchers—letting you not only play with sand sculptures but also cycle around Taiwan’s northeast coast. Moreover, the “Taiwan Tour—Golden Fulong Line,” which operates hourly on weekdays and half-hourly on holidays and takes visitors to nine major northeast coast attractions (Ruifang Railway Station, Jiufen, Gold Museum, Shueinandong, Bitou, Longdong Bay Marine Park, Longdong Four Seasons Bay, Aodi, and Fulong), continues to offer an “NT$50 One-Day Bus Pass” with unlimited rides. Lion Travel also continues to offer the “Golden Fulong Line Tour Package”: for NT$350, enjoy bus vouchers, TRA local train tickets, sand sculpture festival entry, a Fulong bento, and a limited-edition headband; or for NT$299, get bus vouchers, TRA local train tickets, a bicycle experience voucher, a Fulong bento, and a limited-edition headband.
