First-ever Sea Music Festival: Mayday and Sodagreen to Rock Together

Northern Taiwan’s premier music event — the New Taipei City Gongliao International Marine Music Festival — is set to take place from July 10 to 14. This year marks not only the debut of its first-ever short film in 14 years but also the historic first time that two major music acts, Mayday and Sodagreen, will take the festival’s main stage, performing on the first and last days of the event respectively. Additionally, for the first time, a “Top 30 Bands Popularity Battle” will be held, with the most popular band winning a cash prize of NT$10,000.

This year’s festival lineup is impressive, with five themed days: “Rocking the Global Village,” “Taiwan’s Homegrown Rock,” “Women in Rock 2.0,” “Marine Independent Music Awards,” and “Surge, My Sea Festival!” In addition to popular bands from Russia, the United States, Australia, and Japan, outstanding Taiwanese independent bands and artists — including Won Fu, Chairman, Echo, Bai An, Jia Jia, io, Skin Deep, 2011 Marine Independent Music Awards winner BOXING (Boxing), and 2012 winner Freestyle — will also take the stage. Taiwan’s two leading creative bands, “Mayday” and “Sodagreen,” will further energize the event on the first and final days, bringing even more rock power to the festival.

 

The highly anticipated “Marine Independent Music Awards” of the Gongliao International Marine Music Festival saw 234 competing bands go through intense preliminary rounds and three pre-festival competitions. The 10 finalist bands that emerged include: TRASH, TuT, P!SCO, FLUX, Midway Dogs, Hill and Joy, Lin Shaowei & Make Trouble, Deer Antler Band, Dark White Collar Class, and Honey Girls.The top 10 will battle it out on the festival’s main stage during the “Marine Independent Music Awards” night on July 13 (Saturday). On the finals day, last year’s Marine Independent Music Awards winner “Freestyle,” the Jury’s Grand Prize winner “Ding Ding & Xi Xi,” and the “Sea Star” award winner “Gunfire Spicy” will also return to deliver electrifying performances for fans.

In addition, the New Taipei Travel Fan Club is holding a “Popularity Battle” vote for the 30 shortlisted bands. Voting runs from now until July 8. The band with the most votes will win NT$10,000 and a chance to perform on a live house stage. Voters can also enter to win signed posters of their favorite bands, as well as prizes such as a Bluetooth speaker worth NT$5,000, 10 x NT$200 7-11 gift vouchers, 10 x Sea Festival commemorative towels, and 10 x Music ROCK ON souvenir sets.
