The World-Famous Penang Durian Festival: A Must-Visit for Foodies

Durian, known as the “King of Fruits,” is not only highly nutritious but also boasts a unique aroma that has captivated food lovers around the globe. Malaysia’s soil and climate are perfect for durian cultivation, and naturally ripened durians that fall from the tree surpass those harvested elsewhere in taste, making them a top-tier variety praised by durian enthusiasts. Especially from June to August each year, the durians produced in Balik Pulau, Penang, are rich in fragrance and flavor, like a gift from the heavens, making it a paradise for durian lovers. Hence, there’s a local saying in Penang: “When the durians ripen, the sarongs go,” which humorously describes how delicious Penang durians are—so good that people would sell their traditional garment, the “sarong,” just to get their hands on one.

The Penang Durian Festival, which attracts durian enthusiasts from around the world every year, is currently being held until July 31 at the Balik Pulau Viewpoint and Balik Pulau New Market. As soon as visitors step into the orchards, they are greeted by the fragrant aroma of durians all around. Among Malaysian durians, the “Musang King” is an absolute must-try and is hailed as the king of durians. With its slightly red flesh, smooth and sweet texture, the Musang King tastes like ice cream when frozen, melting in your mouth. At the festival’s highlight event, the “Durian King Competition,” the Musang King is always a top contender for the championship.
