New Zealand’s common calcium carbonate limestone geology has created numerous caves beneath the country, featuring expansive underground chambers, spectacular stalactites, fast-flowing subterranean currents, and glowing glowworms. Blessed with this distinctive landscape, New Zealanders, as always, are not content with simply installing lights underground and strolling through politely. Instead, they bring their adventurous spirit from above ground into the depths, continuing to play hard.

Underground adventures are generally divided into two types: blackwater rafting and underground abseiling (Abseiling), with the former being the underground counterpart to above-ground white-water rafting — floating down hidden streams in large rubber tubes (image provided by TRAVELER Luxe).

Underground adventures are generally divided into two types: blackwater rafting and underground abseiling (Abseiling), with the former being the underground counterpart to above-ground white-water rafting — floating down hidden streams in large rubber tubes; the water flow underground varies between fast and slow, making it even more unpredictable than white-water rafting. More advanced trips may also include climbing, cliff jumping, and zip-lining inside cave systems, offering a completely different experience from anything on the surface — you might think a sequel to Indiana Jones is in the works, with you as the star.

Underground abseiling trips allow participants to venture deeper into caves. After securing safety harnesses, you’ll descend dozens of meters straight down ropes into the earth’s depths. In this otherworldly realm, you can leap and scramble across rocks in rubber boots through shadowy forests, or sit beside an underground river, turn off your flashlight, and quietly admire the flickering glow of glowworms.

The richest variety of underground experiences can be found in Waitomo on the North Island, where you can enjoy blackwater rafting, underground abseiling, glowworm caves, or simply take a guided tour of stunning stalactite caverns. On the South Island, you can go blackwater rafting in Greymouth and Charleston.
