The Greater Pier-2 Project has expanded the area of the Pier-2 Art Center. This summer, an installation art exhibition titled “Gas Lab,” themed around gases and their applications, is being curated by emerging artists. On display from now until October 20 at Warehouse C5, the participating artists include Wang Deyu, Wang Xinqi, Pak Sheung Chuen, Tsui Yuechi, Studio Ship, Hsieh Chia-wen, Rachael Morrison, and others. They present creations related to air such as airbags, steam boxes, air collection, bubble wrap, scent actions, and balloons, collectively creating an exhibition filled with a poetic atmosphere that offers visitors a unique sensory experience.

For those art and culture enthusiasts who have visited many exhibitions, have you ever seen a “gas exhibition”? (Image provided by Kaohsiung City – Department of Cultural Affairs)

Air keeps the earth alive and can also carry scents. Human civilization has given air meanings far beyond its most basic functions. Water vapor, formed through evaporation, can be used to cook food or even converted into power. Balloons filled with gas are a child’s favorite and a source of joy. Customized fabric pouches filled with air serve as airbags that ensure safety or provide comfort. Bubble wrap, made up of countless small bubbles, protects delicate and precious items. Though invisible and colorless, air seems intangible yet is closely connected to our lives.

The Kaohsiung City Department of Cultural Affairs states that although air is omnipresent and often overlooked, it is extremely important. At a time when new media in contemporary art is flourishing, a group of artists have chosen air — one of the most relatable substances — as their theme. Through forms such as airbags, bubble wrap, balloons, scents, and steam boxes, they invite audiences to observe, feel, touch, and enjoy these “gaseous” creations. A total of seven artists are featured in this exhibition. Through careful observation, they use the various properties of gases to create works in diverse styles, immersing visitors in a world of gas research, where they can listen, one by one, to the life stories told by the artists.

Visitors to the exhibition can draw inspiration from everyday life and upload a photo with a “scent” to Facebook. The organizers will select the top 10 best scent photos and award small, exquisite gifts. Additionally, artist Hsieh Chia-wen will conduct three live balloon creation sessions during the exhibition period, which will be open for public viewing. This exhibition is completely free to attend. Pier-2 official website: http://pier-2.khcc.gov.tw/content/index.aspx.
