The annual "2013 Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival" is being held at the Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung from now until February 16, 2014. This year, eight teams of architects and spatial designers from both domestic and international backgrounds have presented their prototype realizations, connecting containers with creativity and everyday life.

This year's "2013 Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival – Liveable Containers" attempts to re-examine the characteristics of containers and potential future trends in human society, proposing an alternative direction for container art development — “liveable” container spaces. Multiple domestic and international architect and spatial design teams were invited to propose and realize prototype liveable container spaces, putting into practice the concept of “life design · container architecture.” These works are exhibited at the Pier-2 Art Center, turning containers into an interface connecting creative design and living spaces. Participating teams include Fei-Xun International Co., Ltd.: Zhang Jiaxuan; Lillian Liao Architects: Lillian Liao; Chen Zihao; Huang Yiching Architects: Huang Yiching; Lin Chih-Feng Architects: Lin Chih-Feng, Wang Chiqian; Kuang-Ri Tsai Pei-Yu Interior Design Studio; Jiajia Management Consulting Co., Ltd.: Tsai Pei-Yu; ARKHE-N-SPACES Architects: Eric Cassar; Sou Fujimoto Architects: Sou Fujimoto; and Mecanoo Architecten: Francine Houben + Freek Versteeg.

Hsieh Pei-Ni, director of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, stated that the Container Art Festival is a crucial project for the museum. While containers are typically tools for goods transport, the greatest hope for this festival is to move beyond purely artistic expression and become more closely tied to daily life. Each container in this edition has an architectural use permit, truly making them, as the theme suggests, “liveable.” The participating architects are all top-tier professionals, including internationally renowned teams as well as architects from southern Taiwan. Each piece transcends mere aesthetics and incorporates practicality. Through this Container Art Festival, the museum hopes to once again highlight the pursuit of housing justice, self-renewal, and urban renewal.

Culture Bureau Director Shih Che stated that this Container Art Festival is the exhibition closest to the sea. For Kaohsiung, a port city, containers and the harbor are its most defining features. Holding the exhibition by the waterfront brings the containers back to where they belong. The success of this year’s Container Art Festival is not just about container design, but also a significant statement about Pier-2, the nation’s largest art experimentation zone.
