Chen Chu said that Taiwan and Japan have frequent exchanges and deep ties, with nearly 3 million Taiwanese visiting Japan every year. Kumamoto is a city that blends tradition with progress, boasting rich tourism resources, and enjoys very good interaction with Kaohsiung. Last year, in addition to leading a delegation to attend the Asia-Pacific City Summit, the three parties — Kaohsiung, Kumamoto Prefecture, and Kumamoto City — also signed an international exchange memorandum aimed at promoting cooperation and development across various fields. They hope to enhance exchanges in tourism, industry, and education, and deepen mutual friendship.

To accelerate the launch of regular direct flights to Kumamoto, Chen Chu promised to mediate with China Airlines and hopes the Kumamoto side can overcome technical issues related to nighttime airport curfews for takeoffs and landings. She also welcomes Taiwanese people to visit Kumamoto to further strengthen friendly relations. Tourism Bureau Director Hsu Chuan-sheng said that in the first half of this year, China Airlines plans to deploy two additional planes in Kaohsiung, and direct flights between Kaohsiung and Kumamoto could be launched as early as July to boost tourism in both areas.

Governor Kabashima pointed out that since last year, there have been as many as 115 chartered flights between Kaohsiung and Kumamoto, often fully booked. The residents of Kumamoto Prefecture are also very satisfied with travel itineraries to Kaohsiung. Originally scheduled to arrive in Kaohsiung on a chartered flight, he had to depart from Fukuoka due to full bookings, which shows how closely the two cities interact. He has visited Kaohsiung several times with Kumamon, the mascot of Kumamoto, and has deeply felt the warmth and hospitality of the people of Kaohsiung. He looks forward to the early launch of direct flights to expand the tourism market.
