During this early summer season, the Bureau of Public Works' Parks Division offers you a serene spot to slow down and enjoy the beauty of orchids — the New Orchid Pavilion at Shilin Official Residence Park. The Bureau will hold the “Miscellaneous Genera Orchid Exhibition” at the New Orchid Pavilion from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily between May 29 (Thursday) and June 15 (Sunday), 103 (2014). The so-called miscellaneous genera orchids refer to cultivated orchid species outside the five main orchid genera commonly grown in horticulture: Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, and Bulbophyllum. All other types of orchid genera fall under the category of miscellaneous genera orchids.

This exhibition showcases approximately 50 varieties and over 400 plants of miscellaneous genera orchids. Noteworthy varieties include: the Cymbidium with flowers as large as 18–25 cm, fragrant and long-blooming such as “Golden Tiger,” “Bumblebee,” and “Fragrant Empress”; the “Mouse Tail Orchid” with leaves evolved into stick-like forms over 1 meter long, resembling a long mouse tail — uniquely elegant; the “Necktie Orchid” with leaf widths as thick as a tie; the “Moth-shaped Oncidium” with brownish-yellow blooms resembling a giant moth with three antennae — this exhibition also features its rare yellowish-white variant; the dainty and charming clustered “Clubleaf Aerides” with purple-and-white blossoms; and the vividly colored and diversely hued “Vanda.”

The Miscellaneous Genera Orchid Exhibition, featuring uniquely shaped blooms, vibrant colors, and rarely seen species, brings fresh vitality to the striking red traditional Chinese pavilion — the New Orchid Pavilion. We warmly welcome families to visit the New Orchid Pavilion at Shilin Official Residence Park and appreciate these delicate orchids up close.
