For the past year, the global popularity of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s Yellow Rubber Duckie has swept across the world, and its exhibition in Taiwan even sparked a “duck-chasing” craze among locals. Building on the immense success of last year’s Yellow Duckie at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival,The 2014 Taoyuan Land Art Festival will take place from September 4th to 14th at the former naval base in Dayuan, Taoyuan. This year, Dutch artist Hofman has once again been invited to Taiwan to create and exhibit a specially designed, seasonally themed installation – the “Moon Rabbit” – to accompany the public during the Mid-Autumn holiday.

The Dayuan Naval Base, in operation since the Japanese colonial period, has a 70-year history. Its facilities include a 3.6-kilometer runway, aircraft bunkers, and hangars, making it one of the most important air force bases in northern Taiwan during Japanese rule. This year’s Taoyuan Land Art Festival aims to use art as a medium to integrate the area's unique historical and spatial context, showcasing the distinctive charm that arises from combining art with local heritage. By choosing the Dayuan Naval Base as the exhibition venue, the organizers hope to revive the site’s significant historical legacy dating back to the Japanese era. The existing runway, bunkers, and hangars will also serve as unique art spaces, allowing the public to engage with this once highly restricted naval base in a fun and novel way.

In addition to Hofman’s large-scale installation – the “Moon Rabbit,” which is his only major exhibition piece in Taiwan this year – the event will also feature works by internationally renowned artists such as Li Chen and Hong Yi, as well as Chinese artists Xu Bing and Zhang Huan. The festival will host 28 artistic performances, presenting a different side of Taoyuan’s urban culture.

Also not to be missed: 80 painted black-cat-themed art installations will appear at the exhibition site, another must-see attraction.
