Winter’s Delicate Beauty: Hokkaido’s Seasonal Frost Flowers

When winter arrives, with its biting winds and swirling snow, the northern lands transform overnight into a romantic, snow-blanketed wonderland that captures the imagination. Especially in Hokkaido’s Lake Akan area, delicate white flowers bloom magically on the icy lake surface, floating like something out of a fairy tale and adding a dreamy touch to the majestic Mount Oakan in the distance—a beautiful, seasonal Hokkaido painting.

The small white frost flowers on the lake are actually tiny, uniquely shaped ice crystals, exquisitely delicate and fragile, yet truly moving. According to locals, these winter-exclusive flowers typically bloom in the early mornings between mid-December and mid-January, and only when temperatures drop below minus 15 degrees Celsius. With good luck and sufficiently low temperatures, these beautiful little blooms can last up to three months, remaining until spring arrives and the warming earth causes them to fade away.
