With the arrival of cold fronts, the whole of Taiwan is experiencing damp and chilly weather — the perfect time for hot spring baths and plum blossom appreciation. The Baolai and Bulao hot springs in Kaohsiung’s Liugui District have long been famous, and with the hillsides covered in plum blossoms every winter, this is a great winter getaway destination in southern Taiwan.

During the depths of winter, plum blossoms burst into bloom across Taiwan’s various plum-producing regions. In Liugui, vast plum blossom forests cover an area of 400 hectares.They have been blooming successively since New Year’s Day, with the best blooming period from the 10th to the 15th.This creates the most beautiful floral spectacle in southern Taiwan. Especially in the Zhulin area of Liugui, the sea of plum blossoms is located on the western hillside of Meilong Mountain in Baolai, a specialized plum-growing zone. With an average elevation of 440m to 1,320m, the climate here is ideal for growing plum trees, making it a true plum-specialized region. Every year after New Year’s Day, the area becomes a snowy-white expanse as plum blossoms bloom across the mountain — a truly spectacular sight.
