Taipei’s new mayor, Ko Wen-je, has introduced numerous new policies shortly after taking office, allowing residents to witness the drive and decisiveness of this doctor-turned-politician. However, his efficient governance has also sparked considerable controversy. According to the Taipei City Department of Economic Development, the 10th Taipei International Beef Noodle Festival may be cancelled this year.

The Taipei Beef Noodle Festival was first held in2005during the tenure of then-Mayor Ma Ying-jeou, and has typically taken place around10each year. It successfully promoted beef noodles internationally, making them one of Taiwan’s global culinary icons. Up to last year, the festival had attracted approximately300teams of beef noodle vendors from across the country, also helping to boost the fame of many well-known beef noodle shops such as Old Dong Beef Noodles and Spicy Paradise. However, in recent years, the number of participating vendors has sharply declined, and public interest has waned. After careful consideration, the Taipei City Government believes that the Taipei International Beef Noodle Festival has fulfilled its phased mission—beef noodles have become widely popular among locals and no longer require promotional events. Resources will now be allocated more effectively.

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je also posted on Facebook stating that the Taipei International Beef Noodle Festival has become an important culinary symbol of Taipei, helping the dish gain both local and international recognition. However, with the festival’s phased objectives now complete, Taipei—as a city of gastronomy—must consider more sustainable plans and diverse offerings.
