As spring arrives, the heavy snow on Shirakawa-go will slowly disappear. The winter fairy-tale village turns into a spring paradise. The gassho village in spring is covered in fresh green mountains, dotted with wildflowers, and accented by clusters of soft pink cherry blossoms scattered among the houses—a sight so beautiful it takes your breath away.

Located at the foothills of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan, the Shirakawa-go gassho-style village settlement is surrounded by mountains and crisscrossed with rice paddies. It is renowned for preserving the wooden historical architecture passed down from the Tokugawa shogunate and Edo period, as well as for safeguarding traditional Japanese architectural techniques and village culture. Designated as one of Japan’s World Heritage Sites in 1995, the village attracts a continuous stream of visitors eager to witness the now rare and precious “pristine rural scenery of Japan’s mountain valleys.”
