Typhoon Soudelor battered Taiwan, with many roadside trees and signboards knocked askew by the fierce winds, leaving the area in ruins. But the powerful gusts also inadvertently gave rise to a hot topic.Located at the intersection of Nanjing and Longjiang Roads, a red and a green postbox were accidentally hit by a fallen signboard, knocking them into a playful “leaning” position. Their adorable appearance attracted many passersby to take photos with them, even striking the “Apache Sister” pose for group shots. Dubbed the “cutest postboxes,” they have become an alternative new attraction.

Due to the immense popularity of the leaning design, Chunghwa Post has announced that these two unexpectedly charming postboxes will remain in their current locations, with information signs erected to introduce them as enduring symbols of Typhoon Soudelor’s formidable power. In addition to reinforcing their bases, the public can continue to use them for mail.

To avoid affecting traffic and road safety, Chunghwa Post announced that the leaning postboxes will be relocated next week to the location of the Beitou Post Office on Taipei’s Bo’ai Road. The postal service will also place an explanatory sign nearby to remind visitors of the importance of typhoon preparedness. Additionally, after the move, there will no longer be postal workers stationed by the postboxes for photo ops, so visitors eager to snap pictures with the mailmen and the postboxes should act quickly.

Chunghwa Post originally planned to relocate the postboxes to the front of the Beitou Post Office, but former Minister of Culture Lung Ying-tai criticized the move as foolish. In response, Chunghwa Post urgently announced that the postboxes would temporarily remain in their original locations, with their future fate to be decided within two weeks.
