Must-eat in Kaohsiung #1: Gang Tsai Three Generations Tube Rice Cake with Steamed Egg Soup

Kaohsiung really has so much delicious food, you just can't eat it all. Fortunately, this trip to Kaohsiung was focused on street food, so I could share one portion with Pipi and try more places that way.

This shop was also recommended to us by a local expert ─ Dongdong. Although there are two other well-known tube rice cake shops in the area, we definitely wanted to go with a local recommendation. Dongdong said they only eat at this place, and his mother has been coming here since she was young until now. This shop will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year. This is the ordering area—it’s a bit like a fast-food restaurant where you queue up to order and pay, then take your food to the adjacent dining area.

I always feel like this shop likes to combine two otherwise plain types of food, but I thought the steamed egg soup was super special. The soy-braised iron eggs were great too. I had no idea what Skipjack Tuna Ring Soup was—until I saw the photo of old-fashioned donut-shaped tuna balls. Hahaha. Since we ordered the steamed egg soup, we didn’t get the tuna ring soup.

Tube Rice Cake (NT$35). It comes with slices of ginger on the side, which is pretty unique. I remember there was a lot of meat inside, the rice grains were a bit soft, but not mushy or overly soggy. The taste is quite different from what I’ve had in the north, but it’s still pretty good.

Steamed Egg Soup (NT$35). You guessed it right—you really do get exactly what it sounds like XD. It was exactly as I imagined, no surprises at all: just steamed egg + soup. Honestly, I think it’s special mostly because you don’t see it often, but it’s really just plain broth and steamed egg. That said, the steamed egg had a pretty generous filling.
